The beautiful honed marble mosaic tile backsplash was installed all the way up this wall, creating a gorgeous backdrop for the shelves, cabinets, and countertop. Final photos by www.impressia.net

A lack of counter top space, and the original layout which included an exterior door, and wall separating the dinning room and kitchen, really demanded a new design and complete update. The doorway to the exterior (which is where the triple windows are currently located) took up valuable work space in the kitchen. A wall separated the dinning and kitchen area. The wall was removed and the room was opened up for a space that was much better for entertaining and human interaction. Otherwise, whoever was cooking was walled off from the rest of the house. The main floor of this house received a complete overhaul with the kitchen being relocated and opened up to the dining and living room while being able to enjoy the views of the Cedar River out back. White Shaker style cabinets are used with white quartz counters on perimeter and granite slab on island. A beautiful backsplash tile highlights the space counters. The on-set of a neuromuscular disorder was the basis for this custom kitchen and required the complete customization of this space to the specific needs of the client, as well as to his wife who does most the cooking on a daily basis. The layout was designed for the couple to be able to work together in the kitchen, or independently. The Crystal Keyline island, range-hood and cooktop area are focal points, finished in Antique Ivory w/Brown Highlights, that contrast nicely with Crystal Keyline Toasted Rye w/Brown Highlights cabinetry. The Bayfield door style unifies the design. The Typhoon Bordeaux granite countertops are layered in staggered heights for added visual interest. The Kohler Cruette single-hole faucet with pull-down spout and lever handle service a Kohler "Vault" double-bowl sink (in 8" depth to allow for wheelchair accessibility). A Northland Cast Iron undermount sink in Biscuit makes for a perfect fruit & vegetable prep area, allowing plenty of room for multiple cooks in the kitchen - and yes, it's accessible too! Although largely dictated by the husband's need for accessibility, the universal design of this kitchen is also extremely friendly for a person of smaller stature (his wife!) The couple feels at home in this kitchen yet, it’s not obvious that someone with physical limitations utilizes this space.

First priority for this homeowner was bringing their 1940s home into the 21st century. Undergoing its first renovation, this nondescript, original kitchen gets a much-needed makeover. Underwhelmed by flat, plain kitchen cabinets, tile countertops and vinyl flooring, we replaced all the surfaces, choosing a natural hardwood floor, Absolute Black granite slab countertops, and a white tile backsplash with a linear Vermillion (red) tile accent. The flat panel kitchen cabinets were replaced by shaker style cabinetry with recessed paneling. Original chrome door and drawer pulls were replaced with Satin Nickel. A new farmhouse sink and Satin Nickel fixtures were also added in keeping with the 1940s décor. Stainless steel appliances, including the refrigerator and built-in microwave, added to the current look. As an older home, new wiring and plumbing were required. This resulted in recessed lighting and a new stainless steel hood over the range.

The dishwasher is disguised behind a panel that matches the rest of the cabinets. Pull-out trash and recycling bins are conveniently located next to the sink. The drawer microwave is tucked under the countertop on the peninsula.
