Our client purchased an apartment on the top floor of an old 1930’s building with expansive views of the San Francisco Bay from the palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Bridge, to Alcatraz Island. The existing apartment retained some of the original detailing and the owner wished to enhance and build on the existing traditional themes that existed there. We reconfigured the apartment to add another bedroom, relocated the kitchen, and remodeled the remaining spaces. The design included moving the kitchen to free up space to add an additional bedroom. We also did the interior design and detailing for the two existing bathrooms. The master bath was reconfigured entirely. We detailed and guided the selection of all of the fixtures, finishes and lighting design for a complete and integrated interior design of all of the spaces.

SOMETIMES, A CLASSIC DESIGN IS ALL YOU NEED FOR AN OPEN-PLAN SPACE THAT WORKS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. This client wanted to extend their existing space to create an open plan kitchen where the whole family could spend time together. To meet this brief, we used the beautiful Shelford from our British kitchen range, with shaker doors in Inkwell Blue and Light Grey. The stunning kitchen island added the wow factor to this design, where the sink was located and also some beautiful oak shelving to house books and accessories. We used quartz composite worktops in Ice Branco throughout, Blanco sink and taps, and completed the space with AEG built-in and integrated appliances. We also created a functional utility room, which complemented the main kitchen design.

It is sometimes a surprise what beauty can lurk under the surface of a room. A client with a 1970s kitchen and eat-in area cut up by an unwieldy peninsula was desperate for it to reflect her love of all things English-and-French-Manor-Home. Working closely with my client, we removed the peninsula in favor of a lovely free-standing island that we painted a shade of French Blue. This is topped with Old World sink hardware (note the ceramic HOT and COLD medallions on the faucets!) and a gorgeous marble counter with a very special edge profile that evokes an antique French Boulangerie counter from the 1910s. Pendants with patinaed metal shades over the island further the charming Old World feel. Handmade white and blue tiles laid in a quilted diamond pattern cover the backsplash, and the remainder of the cabinetry at the perimeter is in a warm cream tone. The eat-in near the fireplace got a cozy treatment with custom seat cushions and window seat bench cushions in a classic blue-and-white Toile de Jouy matching the island stools. The nearby living room got a similar treatment. We removed dark wood paneling and dark carpeting in favor of a light sky blue wall and lighter wood flooring. A new rug with the appearance of an heirloom, a new grand-scaled sofa, and some of my client’s precious antiques helped take the room from 70s rec room to English Sitting Room. This traditional blue and white shaker kitchen was built in Drax, North Yorkshire. The clients were looking for a highly functional, open-plan kitchen, but they also wanted to keep the traditional feel of their home. The blue and white shaker cabinets perfectly balance these two requirements. Since this is a complete kitchen renovation, we stripped the space completely, installed new electrical wirings, and did a full reskim. We also added a pocket door system, tiled the floor, and added new radiators. We started by removing a structural wall between the unused dining room and a small kitchen to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and snug area. To do this, we cut the steel within the floor joists to create a flush ceiling and allowed the dropped ceiling around the island to house the ceiling-mounted extractor. We finished the ceiling with a 3-step edge detailing to make a seamless transition between the existing decor and the new look. We chose the Stanton range, a classic shaker-style collection, for the cabinetry. We used a combination of midnight blue and mussel units, offering a sense of warmth and comfort to the room. The worktops are white mirage. There's no need to switch on any lights in this kitchen as we used the Phillips Hue light system, controlled via voice, motion, and phones. We also added motion-activated LED strip lighting in the ceiling for ambient lighting. Lastly, we installed appliances from Bosch and Quooker to create a fully functional kitchen.

Greg and Rose Christianson, founders of G. Christianson, built their house nearly 30 years ago and Rose was ready to update the kitchen. It was a darker part of the house with a wall between the formal dining room and kitchen blocking the natural light. Rose requested better organization, layout, and accessibility. Removing the wall brought in light from the formal dining room and the new soft grey custom cabinets create a brighter and more functional kitchen. The Alder island has 2 different height counters for ease of use. Soft white Cambria quartz counters, medium grey tile backsplash, and upgraded lighting from Hubbardton Forge transform this new space. The addition of the routed finger-hold along the perimeter edge of the countertops helps with grip and accessibility.
