THE PROBLEM Our client adores their traditional layout and their traditional design style. But there were a few things that could be improved including flow and functionality in the kitchen - not to mention the cabinets, counters and appliances that had seen better days. The family room was used heavily for movie viewing, but it did not have a great set-up for the TV and was seriously lacking in the audio department. Their garage entry had become the primary way into the home for the homeowners, however it did not offer the welcoming feeling they wanted to have after a long day. THE SOLUTION To create better flow, we shifted the entry from the mud hall down a bit which gave us the space to add another run of cabinetry and relocate the fridge. We closed up the former dining room wall and converted it into a new office space as both homeowners work from home. Due to the shift in the entry from the mud hall, we also were able to then center the island to where it should be in the room creating some much needed balance. Because we were not creating an open floor plan and removing walls and such, there was more budget for high ticket finishes. One of which was a 11’ custom walnut countertop for the island which became the anchoring design element for the kitchen along with custom cabinetry and high-end appliances.

The large island has loads of drawers and cabinets for additional storage space...not to mention the perfect spot for sampling whatever the cook is dishing up. A custom coffered ceiling helps to define the spaces in this large open great room area. This custom home was designed and built by Meadowlark Design+Build in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A wall between the kitchen and den and a walk-in wet bar were removed. The open plan brought more natural light and a great openness to the space. The team reconfigured the space, encroaching into the laundry area to carve out the placement for the ovens. A large island added much functionality and works as easily for a single cook or several. A unique modular niche at the rangetop was the result of careful planning by the team utilizing large format porcelain tiles for the backsplash. Banquettes are wonderful space-savers, and a curved one is very fun! For this “to the studs” kitchen / great room remodel, we proposed removing the old “exterior” windows which separated the kitchen from the enclosed garden room. We proposed a custom curved banquette to work as a more stylish and functional room separator and to give more floor space for the new kitchen configuration. In addition, the client’s many grandchildren would have a cool spot to dine during family get-togethers. With messy kids and a standard size poodle in mind, we selected a high performing fabric for the back and a durable vinyl for the seat. The soft blue greens and bronze tones are a nice contrast to the “seven shades of gray” used in the kitchen and den. We "flipped" the layout of this kitchen resulting in a much more functional space. We removed an oddly-placed pantry and a less-than-comfortable window bench to reposition the primary sink and working kitchen to overlook the rear garden. The new space is now open to the adjacent living room and provides for a gracefully curved breakfast banquette or counter seating at the island.
