This fun classic kitchen in Gold River features Columbia frameless cabinets in Sandy Hook grey. A green glass backsplash in a random matte and polished pattern complements the cabinets which are faced with both painted wood and frosted glass. The Silestone countertops in the Lyra finish have an ogee bullnose edge. The floors are finished in a rich brown porcelain tile of varying sizes that are made to resemble distressed wood. Interior Design by Smith & Thomasson Interiors. White painted built-ins and dark wood accents pull together this once disjointed kitchen, dining area and sitting room. As gourmet cooks and gracious hosts, the Owners primary goal for the residential remodel was to create an open space that would be perfect for entertaining and family gatherings. The first course of action in opening up the kitchen was to remove the floor to ceiling bookshelves that obscured the view to the living and dining areas. A furniture-style island and banquette now occupy the space and graciously create a central gathering area around a beautifully appointed pedestal dining table with a wood planked top. Clear views are experienced from all angles of the space now and are conducive to socialization between chef and guests. The range wall is highlighted by a custom copper range hood anchored on a full height backsplash of glass tile made from recycled glass bottles, a modern interpretation of the classic subway tile pattern. Flanking the hood are wood accented upper cabinets with seeded glass insets and painted base cabinets creating a symmetrical elevation. A wall of floor to ceiling timeless flat panel storage cabinets line the back wall of the kitchen, creating a backdrop for the distressed wood armoire style paneled refrigerator. The painted cabinetry extends past the entrance into the sitting area where the existing wood burning fireplace was updated with paneling to match the new cabinetry. Classic neutral furnishings with subtle patterns in the sitting area create the perfect place to read a book or converse with a friend. Immediately upon completion, the Owner’s began cooking and entertaining in their new space. Successful on all counts, the remodel has created a casual yet elegant Great Room in which to spend time with family and friends.

This homeowner loved her home and location, but it needed updating and a more efficient use of the condensed space she had for her kitchen. We were creative in opening the kitchen and a small eat-in area to create a more open kitchen for multiple cooks to work together. We created a coffee station/serving area with floating shelves, and in order to preserve the existing windows, we stepped a base cabinet down to maintain adequate counter prep space. With custom cabinetry reminiscent of the era of this home and a glass tile back splash she loved, we were able to give her the kitchen of her dreams in a home she already loved. We attended a holiday cookie party at her home upon completion, and were able to experience firsthand, multiple cooks in the kitchen and hear the oohs and ahhs from family and friends about the amazing transformation of her spaces.

Cooking essentials are all within reach for the serious chefs in this home! Faced with a cramped eat-in kitchen our job was to both maximize and open up the space. By relocating the refrigerator and surrounding it with pantry cabinets, we were able to create more counter space and allow space for two chefs. Warm stained-wood open corner shelving was installed to display the chefs’ favorite items and keep them right at an arm's reach. The breakfast table is now positioned at the window, giving diners a view of the beautiful backyard. The finishes (Executive Cabinetry - Putnam door style in Alabaster paint; Belgian Blue Satin quartz counters by Alleanza) blend seamlessly with the rest of the home.

The design criteria for this home was to create an open floor plan while still defining the various uses within the space. Through the play of finishes and architectural decisions, the kitchen, living room, and dining room flow well from space to space.
