A wood burning fireplace is the centerpiece of the family room area of the open floor plan addition. The space is defined with a big, comfortable sectional sofa, and accented with bespoke decor made from scraps from the original house. Rosie finds this room very comfortable as well.

In this family room remodel, the brick fireplace was refinished with distressed wood mantel, new shelving constructed and the back portion ceiling was removed to create a vaulted ceiling. MACS Contracting, Greg Martz photos.

Refreshing the fireplace was high on our to-do list! The fireplace is now a focal point in the house, and with this overhaul, it's newly crafted, dark wood mantel, Roycroft Green painted brick (by Sherwin Williams), and handmade tiles from Clayhaus are just the right elements to make this statement. These homeowners loved the Gustave Klimpt "Tree of Life" and we made the room shine with refinished hardwood flooring and the wood work refresh throughout. Welcome to an Updated English home. While the feel was kept English, the home has modern touches to keep it fresh and modern. The family room was the most modern of the rooms so that there would be comfortable seating for family and guests. The family loves color, so the addition of orange was added for more punch.

A classic blue-and-white design fills this elegant rug, which mixes traditional designs with bold color, resulting in an artistically striking design piece. The homeowners contacted Barbara Elza Hirsch to redesign three rooms. They were looking to create a New England Coastal inspired home with transitional, modern and Scandinavian influences. Here in the family room we updated the bookcases, fireplace and added new furniture throughout. The color scheme included pale blues, light green, whites, teals and orange. This 300 square foot Back Bay studio was begging for a re-model and maximizing space and maintaining charm were the top priority. We began by moving the kitchen away from the bathroom and closer to the 8 foot windows. Next we lofted the bed to make room for a walk-in closet beneath it and had a custom staircase built that doubled as a chest of drawers. Custom shelving and cabinetry beside the fireplace allowed for extra storage and a place to showcase artwork. Marble head to toe in the bathroom was an easy choice clean and elegant. A swan faucet brought a splash of sass to the space. By selecting light warm tones for the walls and countertops it made the studio feel much larger. A custom 10 foot mirror also made the studio double in size.

When this client was planning to finish his basement we knew it was going to be something special. The primary entertainment area required a “knock your socks off” performance of video and sound. To accomplish this, the 65” Panasonic Plasma TV was flanked by three Totem Acoustic Tribe in-wall speakers, two Totem Acoustic Mask in-ceiling surround speakers, a Velodyne Digital Drive 15” subwoofer and a Denon AVR-4311ci surround sound receiver to provide the horsepower to rev up the entertainment. The basement design incorporated a billiards room area and exercise room. Each of these areas needed 32” TV’s and speakers so each eare could be independently operated with access to the multiple HD cable boxes, Apple TV and Blu-Ray DVD player. Since this type of HD video & audio distribution would require a matrix switching system, we expanded the matrix output capabilities to incorporate the first floor family Room entertainments system and the Master Bedroom. Now all the A/V components for the home are centralized and showcased in one location! Not to miss a moment of the action, the client asked us to custom embedded a 19” HD TV flush in the wall just above the bathroom urinal. Now you have a full service sports bar right in your basement! Controlling the menagerie of rooms and components was simplified down to few daily use and a couple of global entertainment commands which we custom programmed into a Universal Remote MX-6000 for the basement. Additional MX-5000 remotes were used in the Basement Billiards, Exercise, family Room and Master Suite.
