This 4,800 square-foot guesthouse is a three-story residence consisting of a main-level master suite, upper-level guest suite, and a large bunkroom. The exterior finishes were selected for their durability and low-maintenance characteristics, as well as to provide a unique, complementary element to the site. Locally quarried granite and a sleek slate roof have been united with cement fiberboard shingles, board-and-batten siding, and rustic brackets along the eaves. The public spaces are located on the north side of the site in order to communicate with the public spaces of a future main house. With interior details picking up on the picturesque cottage style of architecture, this space becomes ideal for both large and small gatherings. The symmetrical front façade sets the tone by contrasting the earthy textures of shake and stone with a collection of crisp white trim that run throughout the home. Wrapping around the rear of this cottage is an expansive covered porch designed for entertaining and enjoying shaded Summer breezes. A pair of sliding doors allow the interior entertaining spaces to open up on the covered porch for a seamless indoor to outdoor transition. The openness of this compact plan still manages to provide plenty of storage in the form of a separate butlers pantry off from the kitchen, and a lakeside mudroom. The living room is centrally located and connects the master quite to the home’s common spaces. The master suite is given spectacular vistas on three sides with direct access to the rear patio and features two separate closets and a private spa style bath to create a luxurious master suite. Upstairs, you will find three additional bedrooms, one of which a private bath. The other two bedrooms share a bath that thoughtfully provides privacy between the shower and vanity.

The goal was to bring light into the home by creating a three-story paneled staircase bisecting the structure. Not only did it fill the house with natural light, it create a dramatic soaring space.

折り返し階段のリフォームを検討するにあたり、特に気をつけておきたいチェックポイントとして、安全性、機能性、そしてデザイン性があげられます。家の間取りや家族構成に合った折り返し階段デザインを選ぶことは、快適で安全な暮らしの鍵となります。選択した方法によってはリフォーム費用が高額になったり、工期が長くなったりする場合がありますので、あらかじめ取り入れたい機能の優先順位を決め、予算と相談しながらプランを選ぶようにしましょう。

安全な折り返し階段の種類を選ぶ

住まいの中でも折り返し階段は事故が起こりやすい場所。特に高齢者や子供がいるご家庭では、まずは安全性が確保できるよう工夫することが大切です。折り返し階段のデザインには昇降法別に「直折り返し階段」「屈折折り返し階段」「かね折れ折り返し階段」などの種類があります。その中でも特に危ないとされている「回り折り返し階段」「螺旋折り返し階段」「曲がり折り返し階段」を避け、手すりを設置する、踏み面に滑りにくい加工をするといった対策を取っておくと安心です。また、折り返し階段の途中に踊り場を設けたり、人感センサーライトやフットライトを設置したり、部材にカーペットやファブリック、コルクなどの素材を選んだりすると、さらに高い安全性を確保することができます。

折り返し階段のデザイン性と機能性を吟味する

折り返し階段は存在感が大きくひときわ目立つ住宅設備ですので、デザインも慎重に選びましょう。例えば「螺旋折り返し階段」は、小さなスペースにも設置することができるだけでなく、上階からの光を取り入れられるといった利点がある一方、上り下りがしづらい、方向感覚を失いやすいなどの欠点があります。「箱折り返し階段」は、折り返し階段下にトイレや収納スペースを設けることができるので、デッドスペースを有効利用することが可能になります。一方、圧迫感を感じる、設置場所が限定される、工費が高額になる、といった側面も考慮する必要があります。工期や予算が限られている場合、折り返し階段全体をリノベーションする代わりに、古く痛んだ表面を重ね張りしたり、手すりの素材を木製からアイアン製やアルミ製にするだけでも、部屋の雰囲気をガラッと変えることができます。

家族思いの動線を作る
