This gorgeous family home located in southern Sydney has been transformed over the course of 12 months. Our clients were a young family who had recently moved into the home and were faced with an abundance of space to fill. They had a good idea of the looks they liked, but felt unsure about where to buy furniture and homewares and how to pull the whole look together. Together we agreed that their style was a hybrid of Scandi meets luxes meets family friendly. The first area we worked on was the formal living space. The room had very generous proportions and great natural light. Although technically a formal space, with two small children the room still needed to be family friendly. Matching charcoal grey sofas are a comfy choice and the durable fabric choice easily hides wear and tear. When it came to cushions, texture was the name of the game. Leather, linen and velvet all feature heavily, with a soft palette of pale pink, grey, navy, neutrals and tan. It’s the little finishing touches that make this room extra special. We chose concrete and marble accessories with small doses of black and timber to keep the look fresh and modern. Next on our list was the master bedroom. And it was here that we really upped the luxury factor. Our clients really wanted this space to feel like an adults-only escape. We kept much of the colour palette from the downstairs area – navy, pale pink and grey – but we also added in crisp white and soft oatmeal tones to soften the look. We ditched the Scandi vibes and introduced luxury embellishments like glass lamp bases and tufting in the bedhead and footstool. The result was the perfect blend of relaxation and glamour. The final area to receive our magic touch was the dining room and kitchen. Many of the larger pieces were already in place, but the rooms needed dressing to bring them to life. Minty greens, cool greys and soft pinks work back perfectly with a blonde timber dining table a fresh white kitchen. Overall, each area of the home has it’s own distinct look, yet there are enough common elements in place to creative a cohesive design scheme. A kitchen with Danish Modern design influence, combining simplicity with functionalism. Natural looking finishes have been implemented, but a very clean and minimal monochromatic scheme; light linear grain look cabinetry, linear textured cross-cut travertine floor and island top and cream coloured polished solid-surface perimeter countertops with matching backsplash. Diese offene Küche bereicherten wir um eine Theke als bequemen Sitzplatz für einen genüsslichen Kaffee und das Gespräch zwischen den Anwesenden. Viele Schubladen bieten reichlich Stauraum, selbst der tote Winkel unter der Theke ist als Schrank von der Wohnzimmerseite aus zu nutzen. Die warme, geölte Holzarbeitsplatte kontrastiert harmonisch mit der glatten, glänzenden Front. Thematisch achteten wir darauf, dass die Theke punktgenau auf die Fuge zwischen Holzparkett und Schieferboden trifft, um den Übergang vom Wohn- zum Küchenbereich zu unterstreichen. Passend dazu verlängerten wir mit einfachen Mitteln die rechte Seitenwand, die so die Hochschrankzeile bis zu ihrem Sockel geschickt verbirgt. Mit diesen Stilmitteln erscheinen nun beide Räume eigenständig und sind doch untrennbar miteinander verbunden.

The corner site, at the junction of St. Matthews Avenue and Chamberlain Way and delimited by a garden with mature trees, is located in a tranquil and leafy area of Surbiton in Surrey. Located in the north-east cusp of the site, the large two-storey Victorian suburban villa is a large family home combined with business premises, whereby part of the Ground Floor is used as Nursery. The property has been extended by FPA to improve the internal layout and provide additional floor space for a dedicated kitchen and a large Living Room with multifunctional quality. FPA has developed a proposal for a side extension to replace a derelict garage, conceived as a subordinate addition to the host property. It is made up of two separate volumes facing Chamberlain Way: the smaller one accommodates the kitchen and the primary one the large Living Room. The two volumes - rectangular in plan and both with a mono pitch roof - are set back from one another and are rotated so that their roofs slope in opposite directions, allowing the primary space to have the highest ceiling facing the outside. The architectural language adopted draws inspiration from Froebel’s gifts and wood blocs. A would-be architect who pursued education as a profession instead, Friedrich Froebel believed that playing with blocks gives fundamental expression to a child’s soul, with blocks symbolizing the actual building blocks of the universe. Although predominantly screened by existing boundary treatments and mature vegetation, the new brick building initiates a dialogue with the buildings at the opposite end of St. Matthews Avenue that employ similar materials and roof design. The interior is inspired by Scandinavian design and aesthetic. Muted colours, bleached exposed timbers and birch plywood contrast the dark floor and white walls. Gianluca Maver

The brief from our lovely Danish client was that she wanted her home to feel, Hygge. The scandi concept of creating feelings and comfort in a home. She liked the modern contemporary look too. The key was to marry the two concepts. We designed this kitchen with base units in a different colour to the wall and tall units. We broke it up with the wood detail and added plants to soften the whole look and create the Hygge vibe.
