建物南側の外観。レッドシダーの羽目板で仕上げた出窓部分。敷地形状に沿って三角に組まれたウッドデッキの上にはステンレスで製作したオリジナルの物干し金物を設置しました。ウッドデッキは腰かけて庭を眺めることもできますが、内部の床を延長することにより内部空間を広く見せる効果もあります。

This project for a builder husband and interior-designer wife involved adding onto and restoring the luster of a c. 1883 Carpenter Gothic cottage in Barrington that they had occupied for years while raising their two sons. They were ready to ditch their small tacked-on kitchen that was mostly isolated from the rest of the house, views/daylight, as well as the yard, and replace it with something more generous, brighter, and more open that would improve flow inside and out. They were also eager for a better mudroom, new first-floor 3/4 bath, new basement stair, and a new second-floor master suite above. The design challenge was to conceive of an addition and renovations that would be in balanced conversation with the original house without dwarfing or competing with it. The new cross-gable addition echoes the original house form, at a somewhat smaller scale and with a simplified more contemporary exterior treatment that is sympathetic to the old house but clearly differentiated from it. Renovations included the removal of replacement vinyl windows by others and the installation of new Pella black clad windows in the original house, a new dormer in one of the son’s bedrooms, and in the addition. At the first-floor interior intersection between the existing house and the addition, two new large openings enhance flow and access to daylight/view and are outfitted with pairs of salvaged oversized clear-finished wooden barn-slider doors that lend character and visual warmth. A new exterior deck off the kitchen addition leads to a new enlarged backyard patio that is also accessible from the new full basement directly below the addition. シンプルな幾何学的な形状の箱を斜めに組み合わせた個性的な外観。白い塗り壁をベースとして、ガルバリウム鋼板の小波板、レッドシダーの羽目板を組み合わせました。建物の形状を際立たせるため、外構はシンプルなものとしました。

「高基礎の平屋」の建つ地域は以前から近くの河川が氾濫しやすく、水害の多い地域です。 その為にこの地域の民家は造成をして地盤面を上げてあります。 「高基礎の平屋」では「造成」ではなく「高基礎」を選択して、工事金額を抑えてあります。 ローンの関係で平屋ですが構造計算をして「耐震等級3」を確保しました。

白を基調とした明るい外観。四角い箱を組み合わせたようなシンプルな形状。建物で囲んだ中庭はタイルデッキを設け内部からも庭を楽しめるようにしました。アプローチ部分はストロークを長く設定し、路地を思わせる魅力的な空間としています。木製の格子と天井の開口から差し込む光が優しく玄関前を照らしています。
