A Philadelphia suburban Main Line bi-level condo is home to a contemporary collection of art and furnishings. The light filled neutral space is warm and inviting and serves as a backdrop to showcase this couple’s growing art collection. Great use of color for accents, custom furniture and an eclectic mix of furnishings add interest and texture to the space. Nestled in the trees, this suburban home feels like it’s in the country while just a short distance to the city.

The design challenge was to enhance the square footage, flow and livability in this 1,442 sf 1930’s Tudor style brick house for a growing family of four. A two story 1,000 sf addition was the solution proposed by the design team at Advance Design Studio, Ltd. The new addition provided enough space to add a new kitchen and eating area with a butler pantry, a food pantry, a powder room and a mud room on the lower level, and a new master suite on the upper level. The family envisioned a bright and airy white classically styled kitchen accented with espresso in keeping with the 1930’s style architecture of the home. Subway tile and timely glass accents add to the classic charm of the crisp white craftsman style cabinetry and sparkling chrome accents. Clean lines in the white farmhouse sink and the handsome bridge faucet in polished nickel make a vintage statement. River white granite on the generous new island makes for a fantastic gathering place for family and friends and gives ample casual seating. Dark stained oak floors extend to the new butler’s pantry and powder room, and throughout the first floor making a cohesive statement throughout. Classic arched doorways were added to showcase the home’s period details. On the upper level, the newly expanded garage space nestles below an expansive new master suite complete with a spectacular bath retreat and closet space and an impressively vaulted ceiling. The soothing master getaway is bathed in soft gray tones with painted cabinets and amazing “fantasy” granite that reminds one of beach vacations. The floor mimics a wood feel underfoot with a gray textured porcelain tile and the spacious glass shower boasts delicate glass accents and a basket weave tile floor. Sparkling fixtures rest like fine jewelry completing the space. The vaulted ceiling throughout the master suite lends to the spacious feel as does the archway leading to the expansive master closet. For the flooring, the Alava Rhomboid Mosaic Tile in Villa from Florida Tile brings an additional eclectic element into the space. The tile has a rustic reclaimed wood graphic with knots and nail holes and the diamond basket weave pattern conveys a more traditional design aesthetic.

This Mid Century Modern home was designed and lived in by the architect in 1966. Since then there was one other owner but not much was updated to the home. When the current homeowners moved in they found many plumbing and electrical issues that accumulated overtime. They decided it was time for the kitchen, which had a hole in the floor from water damage, to be fixed and updated. They wanted a more open concept in the tight, galley, 60's style kitchen. To do so we needed to move the powder room to another location. New cabinets, flooring, counters, and backsplash were selected for the remodel. And after a lot of construction work was done to update the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical their dreams came true. The homeowners taste and style fits perfectly with the architects intentions for the design of the home. What started as a kitchen remodeling project turned into a large interior renovation of the entire first floor of the home. As design got underway for a new kitchen, the homeowners quickly decided to update the entire first floor to match the new open kitchen. The kitchen was updated with new appliances, countertops, and Fieldstone cabinetry. Fieldstone Cabinetry was also added in the laundry room to allow for more storage space and a place to drop coats and shoes. The dining room was redecorated with wainscoting and a chandelier. The powder room was updated and the main staircase received a makeover as well. The living room fireplace surround was changed from brick to stone for a more elegant look.

Johns specified Norcraft Cabinetry’s Aero door style in Oak Slate with tapered feet for the single vanity. A Granite remnant with bold and contrasting colors complements the warm color tones throughout the home. The vanity was complete with a unique decorative hardware pull and eye catching vessel sink.
