A great example of how a compact backyard can be turned into a beautiful outdoor haven. With a creative approach, this small space now boasts all the main features on the client's wish list: pergola, gas fire pit, water feature and covered patio area.
The square, horizontal/vertical layout gives a modern feel, which is merges with its wooded surroundings thanks to a combination of wood, brick, stone and slate. The height of the pergola frames the landscape and creates a cosy atmosphere under the surrounding tall trees.

Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. New built-in seating and a cozy hammock complete the relaxing space, and dramatic lighting makes it come alive at night.

This small tract home backyard was transformed into a lively breathable garden. A new outdoor living room was created, with silver-grey brazilian slate flooring, and a smooth integral pewter colored concrete wall defining and retaining earth around it. A water feature is the backdrop to this outdoor room extending the flooring material (slate) into the vertical plane covering a wall that houses three playful stainless steel spouts that spill water into a large basin. Koi Fish, Gold fish and water plants bring a new mini ecosystem of life, and provide a focal point and meditational environment. The integral colored concrete wall begins at the main water feature and weaves to the south west corner of the yard where water once again emerges out of a 4” stainless steel channel; reinforcing the notion that this garden backs up against a natural spring. The stainless steel channel also provides children with an opportunity to safely play with water by floating toy boats down the channel. At the north eastern end of the integral colored concrete wall, a warm western red cedar bench extends perpendicular out from the water feature on the outside of the slate patio maximizing seating space in the limited size garden. Natural rusting Cor-ten steel fencing adds a layer of interest throughout the garden softening the 6’ high surrounding fencing and helping to carry the users eye from the ground plane up past the fence lines into the horizon; the cor-ten steel also acts as a ribbon, tie-ing the multiple spaces together in this garden. The plant palette uses grasses and rushes to further establish in the subconscious that a natural water source does exist. Planting was performed outside of the wire fence to connect the new landscape to the existing open space; this was successfully done by using perennials and grasses whose foliage matches that of the native hillside, blurring the boundary line of the garden and aesthetically extending the backyard up into the adjacent open space.

Kirkland's East of Market neighborhood is more urban in character than the surrounding communities, encouraging a design that occupies the urban-suburban boundary. Living spaces are tightly organized and vertical, stacked over the garage, with a shifted geometry between floors creating a dynamic form.

This recirculating water feature was created for the two resident dogs as a doggie drinking bowl. It’s made from a bespoke carved granite bowl and a length of 2” copper pipe with a reservoir beneath. It’s simplic is part of its charm.

The right landscape lighting helps set the mood. These LED Edison bulbs from Prime Patio give off a soft, warm glow. The water pouring from the streambed in the outdoor dining table sparkles with the light concealed within the small pond.

Got rid of all the grass, installed some drought tolerant plants, added a water feature and created a raised dining terrace with privacy screens in an otherwise exposed back yard.

A Heritage Live Oak Tree shades both the garden of the Court / Corten House, and its more public neighbor. Simple ground-covers of gravel and red decomposed granite encourage furnishings and inhabitation, while low barriers and plantings provide various measures of privacy.
