With no stairs and a built-in community condo buildings can be fabulous places to age-in-place. We renovated a high rise condo as the forever-home for our client with custom black walnut cabinetry and opulent dramatically veined stone. The bathroom integrates a grab bar in case it is ever needed.

The client’s request was quite common - a typical 2800 sf builder home with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living space, and den. However, their desire was for this to be “anything but common.” The result is an innovative update on the production home for the modern era, and serves as a direct counterpoint to the neighborhood and its more conventional suburban housing stock, which focus views to the backyard and seeks to nullify the unique qualities and challenges of topography and the natural environment. The Terraced House cautiously steps down the site’s steep topography, resulting in a more nuanced approach to site development than cutting and filling that is so common in the builder homes of the area. The compact house opens up in very focused views that capture the natural wooded setting, while masking the sounds and views of the directly adjacent roadway. The main living spaces face this major roadway, effectively flipping the typical orientation of a suburban home, and the main entrance pulls visitors up to the second floor and halfway through the site, providing a sense of procession and privacy absent in the typical suburban home. Clad in a custom rain screen that reflects the wood of the surrounding landscape - while providing a glimpse into the interior tones that are used. The stepping “wood boxes” rest on a series of concrete walls that organize the site, retain the earth, and - in conjunction with the wood veneer panels - provide a subtle organic texture to the composition. The interior spaces wrap around an interior knuckle that houses public zones and vertical circulation - allowing more private spaces to exist at the edges of the building. The windows get larger and more frequent as they ascend the building, culminating in the upstairs bedrooms that occupy the site like a tree house - giving views in all directions. The Terraced House imports urban qualities to the suburban neighborhood and seeks to elevate the typical approach to production home construction, while being more in tune with modern family living patterns. This galley kitchen makes great use of a small kitchen/dining space in a studio rental unit. The kitchen includes a 24" range, an over-the-range microwave vent hood, and an 18" dishwasher. There is also room for a refrigerator and a stacked washer/dryer unit.

We love the clean and crisp lines of this beautiful German manufactured kitchen in Hither Green. The inclusion of the peninsular island which houses the Siemens induction hob, creates much needed additional work top space and is a lovely sociable way to cook and entertain. The completely floor to ceiling cabinets, not only look stunning but maximise the storage space available. The combination of the warm oak Nebraska doors, wooden floor and yellow glass splash back compliment the matt white lacquer doors perfectly and bring a lovely warmth to this open plan kitchen space.

A narrow galley kitchen with glass extension at the rear. The glass extension is created from slim aluminium sliding doors with a structural glass roof above. The glass extension provides lots of natural light into the terrace home which has no side windows. A further frameless glass rooflight further into the kitchen extension adds more light.

For this kitchen remodel, the clients opted to maintain the location and footprint of the original kitchen in their 1960’s ranch style home. That meant we had our work cut out for us to maximize the counter space while providing enough storage for this growing family. We ultimately decided to maximize the working counter space by the sink and range and added a large pantry wall in the adjacent dining room for bulky items and food storage. We chose a lightly stained slab style cabinet to capture the era of the home but paired it with white high-gloss upper cabinets and white quartz to make the space also look fresh and functional. A light green paint helps pull in the accent color featured in the backsplash while adding warmth to the home. We finished the space with a unique light fixture and a perfectly modern dining table. Simple flat front cabinetry was selected for this kitchen: white for the main work area and deep blue-grey for the island. The mobile island serves both as a buffet and work area when pulled into the work area. The butcher block top adds warmth and echoes the tones of the cherry floor. The long main wall continues into the hallway and stairwell, as does the display of artwork. The white backdrop allows the brilliant colours of the art to sing, while playing off the red walls in the work area.
