Building a Dream Backyard When this homeowner started the design process of a new backyard, Braen Supply was immediately there to supply all the stone materials. The home was part of a new development, so the challenge was to make the home stand out while still addressing specific areas of the existing backyard, such as the steep grade. Working With the Experts Taking the steep grade into consideration, moss rock boulders were selected to create stairs down to the lower area of the backyard where the fire pit sits. The grade of the backyard also allowed for the infinity pool, full color bluestone pattern was selected as the veneer for the back wall of the infinity pool. Braen Supply chose Tennessee gray and bluestone to create a seamless transition from the front of the house to the back of the house. Although they are two different stones, they work nicely together to complete the overall design and tone of the home. It all came together and made the perfect backyard. Louisa, San Clemente Coastal Modern Architecture The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home. A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard. The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment. Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. Ultimately this home has become a place that the families can all enjoy together as the grand kids create those memories of spending time at the beach. Images and Video by Aandid Media.

This home is located on a cul-de-sac of a quiet development adjacent to a local metropark. The living areas are generally shaded and oriented to the south with views of a wooded wetland. Wood ceilings and stone flooring define and unify two primary axes through the structure; the main hall, terminating at each end with views into the woods, dividing the plan longitudinally. This axis also includes the dining room and foyer and serves as a gallery for the Owner’s contemporary art collection. A transverse axis begins with a low concrete wall at the entrance and foyer, which draws one through the living room, and out to the more private rear deck and terraces. The design provides comfortable living spaces for a family of four, and satisfies all of the programmatic requirements of the client, including livability, ability to entertain, and space for growing children. 2005 AIA Toledo Honor Award

Shaded by trees, screened porches on first and second floor along with copula and electronic sky light as well as electronic openers on windows in upper levels, provide a perfect ciphone to draw out the summer heat. Screened in porch on first and second floor linked by staircase from breakfast room to the master suite allow for the feel of being in a tree house to the master suite. Home owners don't turn on their air conditioning until mid June because of the comfortable environment provided by positioning the home on the site, overhangs and drawing cooler air through the home from the outside. The owners are proud that their 3400 sq ft home, during the hottest months, electric bills only run $150,00/month. Loft over Master bathroom and master closet overlooking a vista view.
