The inspiration for the remodel of this San Francisco Victorian came from an unlikely source – the owner’s modern-day cabinet of curiosities, brimming with jars filled with preserved aquatic body parts and specimens. This room now becomes the heart of the home, with glimpses into the collection a constant presence from every space. A partially translucent glass wall (derived from the genetic code of a Harbor Seal) and shelving system protects the collection and divides the owner’s study from the adjacent family room. The concept began with creating an international style modern residence taking full advantage of the 360 degree views of Sarasota downtown, the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota Bay and New Pass. A court yard is surrounded by the home which integrates outdoor and indoor living. This 6,400 square foot residence is designed around a central courtyard which connects the garage and guest house in the front, to the main house in the rear via fire bowl and lap pool lined walkway on the first level and bridge on the second level. The architecture is ridged yet fluid with the use of teak stained cypress and shade sails that create fluidity and movement in the architecture. The courtyard becomes a private day and night-time oasis with fire, water and cantilevered stair case leading to the front door which seconds as bleacher style seating for watching swimmers in the 60 foot long wet edge lap pool. A royal palm tree orchard frame the courtyard for a true tropical experience. The façade of the residence is made up of a series of picture frames that frame the architecture and the floor to ceiling glass throughout. The rear covered balcony takes advantage of maximizing the views with glass railings and free spanned structure. The bow of the balcony juts out like a ship breaking free from the rear frame to become the second level scenic overlook. This overlook is rivaled by the full roof top terrace that is made up of wood decking and grass putting green which has a 360 degree panorama of the surroundings. The floor plan is a reverse style plan with the secondary bedrooms and rooms on the first floor and the great room, kitchen and master bedroom on the second floor to maximize the views in the most used rooms of the house. The residence accomplishes the goals in which were set forth by creating modern design in scale, warmth, form and function.

Located on an established corner in the neighbourhood of Killarney in Calgary, AB, this new single-family custom home was designed to make a lasting impression. Emphasized with a black and white theme, materials include smooth stucco, horizontal siding, brick, metal paneling and cedar accents.

This small project in the Portage Bay neighborhood of Seattle replaced an existing garage with a functional living room. Tucked behind the owner’s traditional bungalow, this modern room provides a retreat from the house and activates the outdoor space between the two buildings. The project houses a small home office as well as an area for watching TV and sitting by the fireplace. In the summer, both doors open to take advantage of the surrounding deck and patio. CASA JO La CASA JO se encuentra en la Urbanización Amberes, en Torrox (Málaga), en una parcela orientada a sur y ligeramente elevada, de manera que además de una buena orientación, disfruta de vistas al mar. Los propietarios compraron la parcela con la vivienda construida en los años 70 y tras vivir unos años en ella, decidieron hacer una reforma total y añadir una primera planta, ya que necesitaban más espacio. La edificación en forma de L, tenía un muro que limitaba la relación de la vivienda con el paisaje. La vivienda en su estado original era una vivienda cerrada en sí misma, dotada de huecos pequeños y rejas. de forma que la relación con el entorno no era lo que sus propietarios deseaban para su vivienda. Decidimos plantear la vivienda justo dentro del perímetro definido por la vivienda original, ya que estructuralmente estaba formada por muros de carga y con este planteamiento conseguimos reducir el coste de la reforma. Eliminamos todo lo que no fuese necesario a nivel estructural, reduciendo la longitud de los muros de carga todo lo posible obteniendo así el tamaño máximo de huecos. Proponemos una primera planta conteniendo los dormitorios, sobre el lado de la L que queda orientado a sur-este, donde tendremos las mejores vistas al mar y el sol de la mañana. El resultado es una vivienda abierta al paisaje, dotada de espacios de transición entre espacio interior y exterior. Conseguimos una vivienda permeable tanto espacialmente como visualmente, dotada de terrazas y porches que permiten disfrutar del espacio interior y exterior en todo el año. Como recursos para conseguir la permeabilidad, además de disponer los huecos evitando cualquier simetría, proponemos recorridos no lineales. Proponemos superficies homogéneas, de color blanco en las superficies verticales y de color gris claro en las horizontales, sin hacer ninguna diferencia entre interior y exterior. Planteamos una pared de vidrio corredera, que en lugar de cerrar, difumina el espacio. Otro elemento que potencia la permeabilidad espacial es la escalera de acceso a la primera planta, diseñada de una forma abierta.

Rear Facade Photo. "Business in the Front, Party in the Back." This project provided Mark with the opportunity to revisit a project from the first year of his practice. Our clients were the third owners since Mark first worked on this house in 1987. The original project had consisted of a small addition to the rear of an existing single-story (over garage) house. The new owners wanted to completely remodel the house and add two floors. In addition they wanted it to be MODERN. This was a perfect fit for where the firm had evolved to over the years, but the neighbors weren't having it. The neighbors were very organized and didn’t like the idea of a large modern structure in what was a mostly traditional block. We were able to work with the neighbors to agree to a design that was Craftsman on the front and modern on the interior and rear. Because of this dichotomy, we sometimes refer to this as the "Mullet House". We were able to minimize the apparent height of the facade by hiding the top floor behind a dormered roof. Unique features of this house include a stunning roof deck with glass guardrails, a custom stair with a zigzag edge and a guardrail composed of vertical stainless steel tubes and an asymmetrical fireplace composition.
