Beginning with a statement copper door and entrance, this stunning townhouse epitomises the perfect fusion of medium density housing with modern urban living. Each room has been carefully designed with usability in mind, creating a functional, low maintenance, luxurious home. The striking copper front door, hinuera stone and dark triclad cladding give this home instant street appeal. Downstairs, the home boasts a double garage with internal access, three bedrooms, separate toilet, bathroom and laundry, with the master suite and multiple living areas upstairs. Medium density housing is about optimising smaller building sites by designing and building homes which maximise living space. This new showhome exemplifies how this can be achieved, with both style and functionality at the fore.

The sheltered Entry Court provides passage to the central front door. This formal arrangement allows for clerestory windows to allow light into the interior of the house, and also allows the space of the house to direct itself towards the garden which surrounds the property. Here, a walkway of stone slabs suspended in a steel casing is raised off of the native limestone ground cover.

In transforming their Aspen retreat, our clients sought a departure from typical mountain decor. With an eclectic aesthetic, we lightened walls and refreshed furnishings, creating a stylish and cosmopolitan yet family-friendly and down-to-earth haven. The inviting entryway features pendant lighting, an earthy-toned carpet, and exposed wooden beams. The plantation style entry creates a stunning entrance to the home with it's low rock wall and half height rock columns the double white pillars add interest and a feeling of lightness to the heavy rock base. The exterior walls are finished in a white board and batten paneling, with black windows, and large dark bronze sconces. The large glass front door opens into the great room. The freshly planted tropical planters can be seen just beginning to grow in.

Custom front doors using old growth White Oak. The clear glass is 1/2"thick and the colored glass is 1" thick chunks hammer into shards and then leaded into to cut spaces between the clear glass sections. The handle sets custom forged by a local black smith.

The homeowners sought to create a modest, modern, lakeside cottage, nestled into a narrow lot in Tonka Bay. The site inspired a modified shotgun-style floor plan, with rooms laid out in succession from front to back. Simple and authentic materials provide a soft and inviting palette for this modern home. Wood finishes in both warm and soft grey tones complement a combination of clean white walls, blue glass tiles, steel frames, and concrete surfaces. Sustainable strategies were incorporated to provide healthy living and a net-positive-energy-use home. Onsite geothermal, solar panels, battery storage, insulation systems, and triple-pane windows combine to provide independence from frequent power outages and supply excess power to the electrical grid. If you are familiar with our work, at Berry Design Build, you know that to us each project is more than just sticks and mortar. Each home, each client, each family we have the privilege to work with becomes part of our team. We believe in the value of excellence, the importance of commitment, and the significance of delivery. This renovation, along with many, is very close to our hearts because it’s one of the few instances where we get to exercise more than just the Design Build division of our company. This particular client had been working with Berry for many years to find that lifetime home. Through many viewings, agent caravans, and lots of offers later she found a house worth calling home. Although not perfectly to her personality (really what home is until you make it yours) she asked our Design Build division to come in and renovate some areas: including the kitchen, hall bathroom, master bathroom, and most other areas of the house; i.e. paint, hardwoods, and lighting. Each project comes with its challenges, but we were able to combine her love of mid-century modern furnishings with the character of the already existing 1962 ranch. Photos by Nicole Cosentino

The sloping site for this modest, two-bedroom house provides views through an oak savanna to Oregon’s Yamhill Valley and the Coastal Mountain Range. Our clients asked for a simple, modern, comfortable house that took advantage of both close and distant views. It’s long bar-shaped plan allows for views from each space, maximum day-lighting and natural ventilation. Centered in the bar is the great room, which includes the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. To one side is a large deck and a terrace off the other. The material palette is simple: beams, windows, doors, and cabinets are all Douglas Fir and the floors are all either hardwood or slate.
