K. Dakin Design won the 2018 CARE award from the Custom Builder and Remodeler Council of Denver for the reimagination of the landscape around this classic organic-modernist home designed by Charles Haertling. The landscape design is inspired by the original home and it’s materials, especially the distinct, clean lines of the architecture and the natural, stone veneer found on the house and landscape walls. The outlines of garden beds, a small patio and a water feature reiterate the home’s straight walls juxtaposed against rough, irregular stone facades and details. This sensitivity to the architecture is clearly seen in the triangular shapes balanced with curved forms. The clients, a couple with busy lives, wanted a simple landscape with lawn for their dogs to fetch balls. The amenities they desired were a spa, vegetable beds, fire pit, and a water feature. They wanted to soften the tall, site walls with plant material. All the material, such as the discarded, stone veneer and left-over, flagstone paving was recycled into new edging around garden areas, new flagstone paths, and a water feature. The front entry walk was inspired by a walkway at Gunnar Asplund’s cemetary in Sweden. All plant material, aside from the turf, was low water, native or climate appropriate.

The owner of this mid-century modern inspired home is a dedicated bird lover and naturalist. With mountain views, ample acreage, and a riparian corridor, the property is often visited by song birds, blue herons, and even hummingbirds in the summer. This 4 ton moss rock was specially selected by Ecoscape's designer for its' bowl- like pockets that could pool water, like a bird bath. The boulder was core drilled in 3 places so water could pass through making a gentle bubbling water sound as it hits the catchment basin.

Photo by Spiering & Co A sunken terrace in an 8 acre garden set in Old Boar's Hill, Oxfordshire. The house dates back over 200 years and the garden falls away from the house, so we designed a series of terraces with steps in between, before you reached a large lake surrounded by waterside planting. This sunken terrace has a central lawn with an original circular water feature in it. The four corners of the lawn have clipped topiary shapes, and the surrounding planting is a mixture of bulbs, perennials and shrubs, so that it will look good all year round. The stone paving is reclaimed Yorkstone which reflects the style of the house.

This is a view of the entire water fall. Behind it, which you can's see, is a huge stone wall that lines a path that winds down from to the lower garden area. We took advantage of the trees behind the path to be the backdrop of the feature, so it didn't look so odd sticking that far out of the ground!
