This beautiful Mid-Century was in desperate need of updating in both form and function. Keeping the original ceilings (which had a slope we needed to mind) helped keep the 50's style. The two tone made it so that the kitchen was broken up instead of being one very long white kitchen. Adding the windows on the exterior wall completely brightened up the space too.

If you look at the kitchen from this angle, you see that both horizontal and vertical cabinets have glass doors. The mix of cabinet sizes and cabinet door materials create a lot of pleasing lines in this IKEA kitchen.

David Stumpf Architecture LLCDavid Stumpf Architecture LLC
The Chatsworth Residence was a complete renovation of a 1950's suburban Dallas ranch home. From the offset of this project, the owner intended for this to be a real estate investment property, and subsequently contracted David to develop a design design that would appeal to a broad rental market and to lead the renovation project. The scope of the renovation to this residence included a semi-gut down to the studs, new roof, new HVAC system, new kitchen, new laundry area, and a full rehabilitation of the property. Maintaining a tight budget for the project, David worked with the owner to maintain a high level of craftsmanship and quality of work throughout the project.

They almost did their kitchen with BODBYN doors in off-white…but at the last minute they changed their minds and went with GRIMSLÖV off-white doors. “The BODBYN felt too traditional, we realized.” The IKEA handles really vary in size, which means the place where the holes are drilled varies, too. So the handles are not so easy to swap out. Choose carefully. For example, the LANSA handles look nice, but Irene finds they find that the little edges tend to catch things like shirts and towels.

The dining room has been converted into an eat-in kitchen space. BERNHARD chairs accompany the extendable STORNÄS table in antique finish. (The pendant lamps are from West Elm)

Martin and Irene, both of whom have European backgrounds, describe themselves as having “grown up in IKEA.” After lots of IKEA furniture in their childhood homes as well as college dorm rooms, they felt it was only logical to go with IKEA for their kitchen renovation. They knew they wanted IKEA but the tough decisions were yet to be made.

Modern appliances were the right fit! In addition to a new refrigerator, the new kitchen had to be outfitted with a garbage disposal and a dishwasher. None of the appliances are from IKEA; there weren’t enough reviews readily available for Irene and Martin to feel comfortable selecting them. (Take note, IKEA).
