Weather House is a bespoke home for a young, nature-loving family on a quintessentially compact Northcote block. Our clients Claire and Brent cherished the character of their century-old worker's cottage but required more considered space and flexibility in their home. Claire and Brent are camping enthusiasts, and in response their house is a love letter to the outdoors: a rich, durable environment infused with the grounded ambience of being in nature. From the street, the dark cladding of the sensitive rear extension echoes the existing cottage!s roofline, becoming a subtle shadow of the original house in both form and tone. As you move through the home, the double-height extension invites the climate and native landscaping inside at every turn. The light-bathed lounge, dining room and kitchen are anchored around, and seamlessly connected to, a versatile outdoor living area. A double-sided fireplace embedded into the house’s rear wall brings warmth and ambience to the lounge, and inspires a campfire atmosphere in the back yard. Championing tactility and durability, the material palette features polished concrete floors, blackbutt timber joinery and concrete brick walls. Peach and sage tones are employed as accents throughout the lower level, and amplified upstairs where sage forms the tonal base for the moody main bedroom. An adjacent private deck creates an additional tether to the outdoors, and houses planters and trellises that will decorate the home’s exterior with greenery. From the tactile and textured finishes of the interior to the surrounding Australian native garden that you just want to touch, the house encapsulates the feeling of being part of the outdoors; like Claire and Brent are camping at home. It is a tribute to Mother Nature, Weather House’s muse.

We pulled the doorway out from the corner to allow for a wall of cabinets that would hide the bulk of the refrigerator, plus allow for the view from the front door to not stop at the hall wall. That slight change yielded better integration, traffic and light flow.

Orange was the core colour with muted greys, concrete and wood to warm up this large space. While the 70s was core to the style, sleek industrialism was woven in with crittall doors and concrete worktops.

A full wall where the island now stands enclosed the original kitchen and cut it off from the rest of the house. Removing the wall, and adding a new island instantly opened the kitchen to the living area, and flooded the space with light. The original acoustical ceiling panels were replaced with drywall to highlight the structural beams. New skylights and overhead lights were installed to add light where there was none. The original white metal cabinetry, pink countertops and original appliances from 1963 reflected the worst of the mid-century era. The space was completely redesigned, starting with an expansive island. Custom book-matched walnut cabinets, natural blue tortuga quartzite counter-tops, and professional-grade stainless steel appliances result in a marriage of beauty and function. Recycled concrete tiles from Revolv adorn the back-splash and compliment the counter tops. The art wall on the north side of the kitchen adds interest while offering additional storage hidden behind the custom sliding pantry doors.

The kitchen includes a large island with seating and a prep-sink, paneled wood cabinets, and large windows open the kitchen to the view of the water and Mt Rainier.

This is a fully custom kitchen featuring natural wood custom cabinets, quartz waterfall countertops, a custom built vent hood, brick backsplash, build-in fridge and open shelving. This beautiful space was created for a master chef with mid-century modern a touch of rustic aesthetic.

This modern contemporary kitchen is inspired by Woodways' Italian parent company, Zordan. Utilizing light woodgrain laminate cabinetry with sleek slab style doors, this kitchen becomes the focal point of any home. A gray quartz is seen within the island, perimeter countertop, and as a sliding piece over the sink for hidden storage. The island includes a simple waterfall edge and exposed shelving areas as well as a built in freezer drawer to accommodate compact spaces. with simple waterfall edge. Purple accents bring color into the crisp and sleek kitchen. Lift door upper cabinets allow for full access of cabinet space.

This beautiful Mid-Century was in desperate need of updating in both form and function. Keeping the original ceilings (which had a slope we needed to mind) helped keep the 50's style. The two tone made it so that the kitchen was broken up instead of being one very long white kitchen. Adding the windows on the exterior wall completely brightened up the space too.
