This 1950s home was sporting elements of the original kitchen and the dark space was not meeting our client’s needs. The original kitchen didn’t have much to offer in the way of functionality, so our first order of business was to create a design that would exponentially increase the usability of the kitchen. We brought in functional cabinetry, introduced uninterrupted work surfaces, and added plenty of lighting to brighten up their kitchen. They also wanted to open the new kitchen to the living room and create space for a larger dining table, so we started by removing the existing cabinetry that was visually cut the living space in two and minimized the power of the dramatic vaulted ceiling. We also extended the wood flooring into the kitchen as well to create seamless transitions between spaces. We fell in love with the idea of a two-toned cabinetry design for this kitchen and ultimately went head over heels for clean white painted base cabinets and a textured wood-look melamine on the uppers. This gave us a crisp backdrop that allowed us to bring is fun forms like the black light fixture over the table and the gorgeous silhouettes on the hardware. We played a lot with directionality in this space. The elongated open shelves and rectangular backsplash tiles give us wonderfully clean horizontal lines, but to balance those out we brought in a vertical grain pattern on the wall cabinets and added long black cabinetry pulls that emphasize the verticality of the space. The clients have a green thumb and wanted to make sure we created a home for their growing plant collection. The open shelving gives us plenty of opportunities for foliage and to showcase fun kitchen accessories. This design feels like home and brings together the clean lines and crisp finishes our clients were looking for.

This beautiful Claremont, CA home built in 1955 got a wonderful Mid-Century Modern update to the kitchen. The fireplace adjacent to the kitchen was the inspiration for this space. Pure white brick matched with a natural “Dune” stained maple mantle. Opposite the fireplace is a display will donned with matching maple shadowbox shelving. The pure white cabinets are topped with a Cabrini Grey quartz from Arizona Tile, mimicking a combination of concrete and limestone, with a square edge profile. To accent both the countertop and the cabinets we went with brushed gold and bronze fixtures. A Kohler “White Haven” apron front sink is finished with a Delta “Trinsic” faucet in champagne bronze, with matching push button garbage disposal, soap dispenser and aerator. One of the largest changes to the space was the relocating of the plumbing fixtures, and appliances. Giving the stove its own wall, a 30” KitchenAid unit with a stainless steel hood, backed with a stunning mid-century modern rhomboid patterned mosaic backsplash going up to the ceiling. The fridge stayed in the same location, but with all new cabinetry, including an over-sized 24” deep cabinet above it, and a KitchenAid microwave drawer built into the bottom cabinets. Another drastic change was the raising of the ceiling, pulling the height up from 8 foot to 9 foot, accented with crown moldings to match the cabinetry. Next to the kitchen we included a built in accent desk, a built in nook for seating with custom leather created by a local upholsterer, and a built in hutch. Adding another window brought in even more light to a bright and now cheerful space. Rather than replace the flooring, a simple refinish of the wood planks was all the space needed blending the style of the kitchen into the look and feel of the rest of the home. While the new owner of this Windsor Heights home appreciated its location and ranch style, she was ready to open up the space and update the functionality and aesthetic to fit her life and style. Our wonderful Baker clients were ready to remodel the kitchen in their c.1900 home shortly after moving in. They were looking to undo the 90s remodel that existed, and make the kitchen feel like it belonged in their historic home. We were able to design a balance that incorporated the vintage charm of their home and the modern pops that really give the kitchen its personality. We started by removing the mirrored wall that had separated their kitchen from the breakfast area. This allowed us the opportunity to open up their space dramatically and create a cohesive design that brings the two rooms together. To further our goal of making their kitchen appear more open we removed the wall cabinets along their exterior wall and replaced them with open shelves. We then incorporated a pantry cabinet into their refrigerator wall to balance out their storage needs. This new layout also provided us with the space to include a peninsula with counter seating so that guests can keep the cook company. We struck a fun balance of materials starting with the black & white hexagon tile on the floor to give us a pop of pattern. We then layered on simple grey shaker cabinets and used a butcher block counter top to add warmth to their kitchen. We kept the backsplash clean by utilizing an elongated white subway tile, and painted the walls a rich blue to add a touch of sophistication to the space.

This midcentury-inspired kitchen, breakfast nook, dining + living room revamps a tired old '60s ranch for a family with three kids. A bright backsplash evokes Italian modernism and gives a playful vibe to a family-friendly space. Custom cherry cabinets match the living room built-ins and unify the spaces. An open, easy plan allows for free flow between rooms, and a view of the garden for the cook.

A retired teacher and grandmother, our client raised her family in this Valley view home. With amazing potential for an enhanced territorial view, this project had been on our client’s mind for quite some time. She was very particular in selecting us as her design and build team. With deep roots in her community, it was important to her that she works with a local community-based team to design a new space, while respecting its roots and craftsmanship, that her late husband had helped build.
