ECHT-ARCHITECTSThe Courtyard House, designed in 1964 by Sarasota School of Architecture's Jack West, is a Homes for Better Living Award winner, published in Architectural Record Houses of 1965. Known for it's simple materiality, open plan, and sweeping curving roof shape, the home had seen several renovations before the current owners came to us with a challenge: let us celebrate the spirit of the Courtyard House with a serene reflecting pool at the entry of the home.
The design strategy was to introduce several wall planes, perforated and screened with wood-look aluminum battens, that gradually reveal the home and provide a neutral base for the strong, sweeping curved form of the existing roof.
The introduction of the wall planes allowed for a subtle reorganization of the entry sequence, and a unique opportunity to experience the reflecting pool with a sense of privacy.
A new pool and terrace with integrated fire feature look over the beautiful Dolphin Waterway, and provide for a relaxing evening for the family, or a backdrop for a large gathering.

Acorn Deck House CompanyWith a grand total of 1,247 square feet of living space, the Lincoln Deck House was designed to efficiently utilize every bit of its floor plan. MRTN ArchitectsLocated in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula this addition helps to create a family home from the original 1960’s weekender. Although in good condition the late modernist home lacked the living spaces and good connections to the garden that the family required.
The owners were very keen to honour and respect the original dwelling. Minimising change where possible especially to the finely crafted timber ceiling and dress timber windows typical of the period.
The addition is located on a corner of the original house, east facing windows to the existing living spaces become west facing glazing to the additions. A new entry is located at the junction of old and new creating direct access from front to back.

Clint Miller ArchitectClint Miller’s commitment to empathetic use of the Sonoran is exemplified in his family’s new home in Carefree. Miller purchased a home which had been reduced to a few standing walls but which occupied a classic desert lot in an older area of Carefree.
The home's design is an homage to the work of two masters of modern architecture: Philip Johnson’s Glass House; and Mies van der Rohe’s, central concept of “less is more” and use of glass and steel. The two revolutionized modern architecture and defined clean, minimalist design.
Influenced by these masters and subtly integrated into its site, the home is now a modern adaptation of Carefree’s earliest homes, featuring a simple, stretched, rectilinear design, complemented by a timeless, warm color palette and floor-to-ceiling windows which provide direct views of Black Mountain.
The home’s meandering driveway leads past a major wash and diverse, abundant vegetation to a dwelling that has been both reclaimed and modernized with such features as roof overhangs which shield the glass expanses from summer sun and linear ventilation patterns.
