When you imagine drinking an incredible glass of red wine, you might daydream of a Tuscan destination with rolling vineyard hills, stucco homes with tiled rooftops, and a breathtaking view. For our latest custom wine cellar project, we brought a bit of that Tuscan dream to Oregon, mixing polished concrete floors, rustic reclaimed wood, and gorgeous stonework to create a Tuscan-style cellar that feels right at home in the Pacific Northwest. The wine cellar features classic lighting and best-in-class wine refrigeration to complete the package. Benvenuto!

Desert Retreat at Silverleaf

The genesis of design for this desert retreat was the informal dining area in which the clients, along with family and friends, would gather. Located in north Scottsdale’s prestigious Silverleaf, this ranch hacienda offers 6,500 square feet of gracious hospitality for family and friends. Focused around the informal dining area, the home’s living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, offer warmth of materials and proximity for expansion of the casual dining space that the owners envisioned for hosting gatherings to include their two grown children, parents, and many friends. The kitchen, adjacent to the informal dining, serves as the functioning heart of the home and is open to the great room, informal dining room, and office, and is mere steps away from the outdoor patio lounge and poolside guest casita. Additionally, the main house master suite enjoys spectacular vistas of the adjacent McDowell mountains and distant Phoenix city lights. The clients, who desired ample guest quarters for their visiting adult children, decided on a detached guest casita featuring two bedroom suites, a living area, and a small kitchen. The guest casita’s spectacular bedroom mountain views are surpassed only by the living area views of distant mountains seen beyond the spectacular pool and outdoor living spaces. ワインの保存に適した環境とは？

ワインの本場であるヨーロッパでは、地下に「カーヴ」と呼ばれる貯蔵庫を設置し、そこでワインを保存して熟成させます。つまり、カーヴはワインを保存・熟成させるための理想的な環境であり、具体的には

温度は15℃くらいで常に一定

湿度は70％くらいの高め

日光や蛍光灯の光が当たらない

ワインボトルは横に寝かせた状態で動かない

においがこもらない

といった条件が挙げられます。それに比べて、温度差も湿度差も大きい日本の気候は、残念ながらワインの保存には適しているとは言えません。特に、近年のように真夏日・猛暑日が続くような環境にワインを置いておくと、変質して香りが損なわれてしまいます。

地中海スタイルのワインセラーと冷蔵庫の違い

暑さがワインの大敵なら、家庭の冷蔵庫にワインを保存するのはどうでしょう？冷蔵庫にはさまざまな食品が保存されており、毎日何度も開け閉めされ、そのたびに振動します。また、ワインにとっては温度が低すぎるために熟成が進まず、また湿度が低すぎてコルク栓が乾燥してしまいます。したがって、冷蔵庫はワイン保存の条件を満たしておらず、ワインの長期保存には向いていません。一方、ワインセラーはワインの保存に特化しているので、他の食品の匂いが移る心配もありませんし、温度や湿度もワインに最適な設定で保存することができます。

ワインセラーの選び方

最近は自宅で使える小型の家庭用ワインセラーも種類がいろいろあり、選択肢が増えてきました。ワインセラーは、価格や保存するワインの本数、設置スペースで決めるのが一般的ですが、製造国も考慮すべき重要なポイントです。ヨーロッパのメーカーは、ワインセラーの歴史が長く経験に裏打ちされた商品が多くて安心ですが、比較的大型で高価な製品が多いのが特徴です。日本国内メーカーの製品は、日本の住宅事情を考慮したサイズ感のものが多く、万一故障の際も修理が簡単に受けられるメリットがあります。また、最近は中国製のお手頃価格の製品も増えてきました。ワインセラーと比較されるものとして「ワインクーラー」があります。一般的に、ワインセラーとワインクーラーの違いは加湿機能があるかどうかで、湿度調整もできるものがワインセラー、温度調整に特化したものがワインクーラーですが、両方とも「ワインセラー」と表記されることがほとんどです。加湿機能がないといっても、庫内は冷蔵庫ほど乾燥せず適度な湿度が保たれるので、デイリーワインを保存するだけならワインクーラーでも十分目的を果たせるでしょう。

ワインを楽しむスタイルは人それぞれです。デイリーワインをいつでも飲み頃の温度で楽しめるよう一時的ストックのためにワインセラーを設置したい方もいれば、高級ワインや貴重なヴィンテージワインの長期保存に使用される方もいらっしゃることでしょう。その目的によって、設置すべきワインセラーも変わってきます。自分のワインスタイルにあったワインセラーを設置したいですよね。
