Kitchen Lounge

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Everyone gathers together, standing around eating and drinking. We envisioned this sitting area, off the kitchen, as a space where everyone can congregate and relax while taking in the ocean view.

Appliance Garage

Keeping small appliances behind closed doors reduces counter clutter and saves time by not having to put everything away after each use. This appliance garage has a push light and electrical outlets inside for added convenience.

Two-Tone Cabinets

Often times I will paint or stain the island cabinets a different color than the rest of the kitchen cabinets. It elevates the style and appears more like a piece of furniture than a standard kitchen island.

Runner Rug in Kitchen

Many people are afraid of wood floors in the kitchen. As long as you don't let spills sit for extended periods of time, the wood should remain looking like new for years to come. I usually recommend rugs (paired with high-quality, non-slip rug pads) in high-traffic areas like kitchens and hallways. Don't be afraid of vintage or wool rugs, as they can be professionally cleaned if a big enough spill warrants it.

Accessibility

Having the kitchen open to the dining room is ideal for many reasons. One being that people can serve themselves on the island without having to transfer all of the food to the table. It also encourages people to sit at the dining table without the fear of feeling left out.

This kitchen island backs up to a fairly narrow walkway, so seating was not an option, as stools would have been too tight. Instead we created 12 inch deep cabinets on the backside to house the owner's Le Creucet collection. For a seamless look, we left off any hardware. All other cabinets in this home have soft-close hinges, with the exception of these, since we chose to leave off the knobs.
