Our Carmel design-build studio was tasked with organizing our client’s basement and main floor to improve functionality and create spaces for entertaining. In the basement, the goal was to include a simple dry bar, theater area, mingling or lounge area, playroom, and gym space with the vibe of a swanky lounge with a moody color scheme. In the large theater area, a U-shaped sectional with a sofa table and bar stools with a deep blue, gold, white, and wood theme create a sophisticated appeal. The addition of a perpendicular wall for the new bar created a nook for a long banquette. With a couple of elegant cocktail tables and chairs, it demarcates the lounge area. Sliding metal doors, chunky picture ledges, architectural accent walls, and artsy wall sconces add a pop of fun. On the main floor, a unique feature fireplace creates architectural interest. The traditional painted surround was removed, and dark large format tile was added to the entire chase, as well as rustic iron brackets and wood mantel. The moldings behind the TV console create a dramatic dimensional feature, and a built-in bench along the back window adds extra seating and offers storage space to tuck away the toys. In the office, a beautiful feature wall was installed to balance the built-ins on the other side. リビングは家族みんなが集まる部屋。テレビを観たり、ゲームで遊んだり、本を読んだり、一日のできごとを語ったりと、家族が各々で、また揃って様々なことをするスペースがリビングです。子どもが小さいうちは、リビングに遊び場所をつくることも多いでしょうし、小学生になればリビングで宿題をすることもあるかもしれません。そしてその隣ではお母さんが家事や趣味の作業をしたり、パソコンを使うことも考えられます。また、特別な客間がない限り、リビングにお客さまを招くことも多いはずです。そんな多目的な部屋だからこそ、おしゃれでくつろげるリビングをつくるヒントを探しましょう。

おしゃれなリビングのインテリアとは？

リビングのインテリアほど頭を悩ませるものはないでしょう。日常的に家族が集まる場所であり、客間として来客をもてなす場所でもあるリビングルームは、飽きのこないインテリアと、少しばかりの個性が必要となります。大きなソファーを置くのもいいですが、一人がけの椅子を家族の人数に合わせて置いたりするのも個性的ですね。一方で、ローテーブルやテレビ台などの家具は、リビングの壁や床の色との馴染みを考えながら選ぶと失敗しません。家族で使うリビングは、それだけ多くのものが持ち込まれる場所。雑多なものであふれかえりがちなので、壁面収納や床下収納など、リビング全体のスペースを有効に使って、整理整頓しやすい部屋づくりが必要です。床に導線の妨げとなる物を置かないという単純なことだけでも、広くて快適なリビングづくりにつながります。

リビングを広く見せるコツ

日本の住宅ではリビングや客間のスペースを広く取れないことも多く、少しの家具でも窮屈に感じてしまうこともあるでしょう。間取りが決まっているからこそ、視覚で広く見せるコツがあります。

天井を高く見せるため、リビングの家具はなるべく低いものに統一する。

家具をリビングの中央に置かず、壁や部屋の隅に沿って配置して視線の中心に置かない。

床に敷くラグはあまり大きなサイズにせず、フローリング面を大きく見せる。

明るい色の家具を配置する。白い家具は光を反射し部屋を明るく見せ、広く感じさせる効果がある。

お客さまの印象に残る、すてきなリビングのつくり方

ゲストルームがある家はその限りではありませんが、ほとんどの家庭では、お客さまをリビングにお通しします。お客さまを迎えるときには、生活感あふれるいつものリビングだとちょっぴりナンセンス。そこで、インテリアにアクセントを加えてみてはいかがでしょうか。すぐできる工夫としては、ローテーブルに花を飾ったり、季節の装飾品アイテムを添えたりすることです。コーヒーテーブルブックと呼ばれる装丁の美しい本や、さり気なく飾った旅先の写真なども会話のきっかけになりますね。
