DESIGN BRIEF “A family home to be lived in not just looked at” placed functionality as main priority in the extensive renovation of this coastal holiday home. Existing layout featured: – Inadequate bench space in the cooking zone – An impractical and overly large walk in pantry – Torturous angles in the design of the house made work zones cramped with a frenetic aesthetic at odds with the linear skylights creating disharmony and an unbalanced feel to the entire space. – Unappealing seating zones, not utilising the amazing view or north face space WISH LIST – Comfortable retreat for two people and extend family, with space for multiple cooks to work in the kitchen together or to a functional work zone for a couple. DESIGN SOLUTION – Removal of awkward angle walls creating more space for a larger kitchen – External angles which couldn’t be modified are hidden, creating a rational, serene space where the skylights run parallel to walls and fittings. NEW KITCHEN FEATURES – A highly functional layout with well-defined and spacious cooking, preparing and storage zones. – Generous bench space around cooktop and sink provide great workability in a small space – An inviting island bench for relaxing, working and entertaining for one or many cooks – A light filled interior with ocean views from several vantage points in the kitchen – An appliance/pantry with sliding for easy access to plentiful storage and hidden appliance use to keep the kitchen streamlined and easy to keep tidy. – A light filled interior with ocean views from several vantage points in the kitchen – Refined aesthetics which welcomes, relax and allows for individuality with warm timber open shelves curate collections that make the space feel like it’s a home always on holidays.

The kitchen renovation included expanding the existing laundry cabinet by increasing the depth into an adjacent closet. This allowed for large capacity machines and additional space for stowing brooms and laundry items.

This built in laundry shares the space with the kitchen, and with custom pocket sliding doors, when not in use, appears only as a large pantry, ensuring a high class clean and clutter free aesthetic.

Designed by Darcie Duncan of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Salem, VA in collaboration with Danny Clinevell, this kitchen remodeling project features a transitional style inspired design. The kitchen features Ultracraft Cabinetry in the door style Clemont in a true mixture of two finishes, a Grey Opal paired with a Bright White finish is mixed throughout the entire design. Kitchen countertops and backsplash are Silestone in the color Calacatta Gold, complemented by a Kohler Vault sink and Kohler Simplice Faucet. Appliances were provided by others. The laundry remodel features Merillat Classic cabinets in the Portrait door style in a Cotton finish. “I love the Grey Opal textured cabinets that we incorporated on the wall section,” said Darcie. “They add character and interest while still keeping the kitchen light and bright, a subtle change from the all-white that we do so often. Laundry under stairs - We designed the laundry under the new stairs and carefully designed the joinery so that the laundry doors look like wall panels to the stair. When closed the laundry disappears but when it's open it has everything in it. We carefully detailed the laundry doors to have the stair stringer so that your eye follows the art deco balustrade instead.

Formerly named the scullery, the utility is fast becoming a room high up on homebuyers wishlists. Located just off the kitchen, it's usually the engine of the house used for laundry, storing cleaning supplies and large appliances Tall pantry style storage can be designed for specific jobs such as housing an ironing board, laundry products and baskets or essential cleaning supplies. Other small kitchen appliances that may be cluttering up your kitchen can also be stored in a utility.
