Underpinning our design notions and considerations for this home were two instinctual ideas: that of our client’s fondness for ‘Old Be-al’ and associated desire for an enhanced connection between the house and the old-growth eucalypt landscape; and our own determined appreciation for the house’s original brickwork, something we hoped to celebrate and re-cast within the existing dwelling. While considering the client’s brief of a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house, our design managed to reduce the overall footprint of the house and provide generous flowing living spaces with deep connection to the natural suburban landscape and the heritage of the existing house. The reference to Old Be-al is constantly reinforced within the detailed design. The custom-made entry light mimics its branches, as does the pulls on the joinery and even the custom towel rails in the bathroom. The dynamically angled ceiling of rhythmically spaced timber cross-beams that extend out to an expansive timber decking are in dialogue with the upper canopy of the surrounding trees. The rhythm of the bushland also finds expression in vertical mullions and horizontal bracing beams, reminiscent of both the trunks and the canopies of the adjacent trees.

The storage space that was lost was regained below the new peninsula, creating a functional u-shaped workspace around the oven. The peninsula also features a pull-out trash bin, a convenient electrical outlet, and an extended edge for bar stool seating. Final photos by Impressia Photography.

Oak hardwoods were laced into the existing floors, butcher block countertops contrast against the painted shaker cabinets, matte brass fixtures add sophistication, while the custom subway tile range hood and feature wall with floating shelves pop against the dark wall. The best feature? A dishwasher. After all these years as a couple, this is the first time the two have a dishwasher. Custom storage options designed for new cabinetry to increase function of workspaces. Lemans pullout makes great use of "blind corner" in base cabinets. Deep and wide drawers used to store cookware. The expanded original kitchen footprint by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Cramped kitchen was closed off to rest of home with only two narrow entryways. New layout provides more countertop workspace with the addition of a peninsula. Soffits were removed to provide full height cabinets for additional storage. Natural light floods the new open concept layout.

The coziest of log cabins got a hint of the lake with these blue cabinets. Integrating antiques and keeping a highly functional space was top priority for this space. Features include painted blue cabinets, white farm sink, and white & gray quartz countertops.

This 1940's beach cottage has been renovated to include the orginal floors, doors and vintage glass door knobs. The owner collaborated with Terri Dubose @ Woodsman Kitchens and Floors. The combination of navy and white inset furniture grade cabinets with the white marbled quartz top, subway tile, ship lap, shutters and brass accents all complete this classic coastal style.
