The Two Cooks Kitchen was designed so both Margaret and Bob can be chefs at the same time with lots of room to move around, and lots of natural light filling the space.

The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

View from living area into the kitchen. The waterfall counter top adds an extra pop of green, breaking up the wood cabinets and flooring. Open stairs add visual interest, and the punch of green on the ceiling draws your eye upward.

Recently retired, this couple wanted and needed to update their kitchen. It was dark, lifeless and cramped. We had two constraints: a tight budget and not being able to expand the footprint. The client wanted a bright, happy kitchen, and loves corals and sea foam greens. They wanted it to be fun. Knowing that they had some pieces from the orient we allowed that influence to flow into this room as well. We removed the drop ceiling, added crown molding, light rail, two new cabinets, a new range, and an eating area. Sea foam green Corian countertop is integrated with a white corian sink. Glazzio arabesque tiles add a beautiful texture to the backsplash. The finished galley kitchen was functional, fun and they now use it more than ever.

Condos are often a challenge – can’t move water, venting has to remain connected to existing ducting and recessed cans may not be an option. In this project, we had an added challenge – we could not lower the ceiling on the exterior wall due to a continual leak issue that the HOA has put off due to the multi-million-dollar expense. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Work Centers: prep, baking, clean up, message, beverage and entertaining. Vignette Design: avoid wall to wall cabinets, enhance the work center philosophy Geometry: create a more exciting and natural flow ANGLES: the baking center features a Miele wall oven and Liebherr Freezer, the countertop is 36” deep (allowing for an extra deep appliance garage with stainless tambour). CURVES: the island, desk and ceiling is curved to create a more natural flow. A raised drink counter in Sapele allows for “bellying up to the bar” CIRCLES: the 60” table (seating for 6) is supported by a steel plate and a custom column (used also to support the end of the curved desk – not shown) ISLAND CHALLENGE: To install recessed cans and connect to the existing ducting – we dropped the ceiling 6”. The dropped ceiling curves at the end of the island to the existing ceiling height at the pantry/desk area of the kitchen. This adorable couple has spent a lifetime making other peoples homes around San Diego feel special through their inspired and delightful placement of natural plants for interior, creating each space in which they live, work, and play. They have also made their home an oasis where anyone visiting feels comfortable and yet excited by all the beautiful flowers and planting everywhere around their home. We were honored to be selected to help Andrea and Winston bring the heart of their home to life. When you have waited for years to have the kitchen of your dreams you want everything you could have possibility thought about. One thing the client wanted was when she walked into the front door of your home was to feel like she was not looking into her kitchen. We achieved that by creating a breakfast bar section with a distressed grayish green cabinetry.

A slight nod to Scandinavian design with the flat front kitchen cabinet doors and wood knobs as pulls. The floating stainless steel shelves allow for an artful curation of meaningful everyday objects within easy reach. Previous upper cabinets were removed to allow for more light and airiness above to bounce around.
