A canary yellow glass 'canopy' ceiling which continues down to counter level as a backsplash, acts as a bright yet intimate foil to the adjacent double-height living room. It also houses services including the extractor and perimeter lighting. The hobs are located on one side of the island unit, which provides counter seating for six. After many years of careful consideration and planning, these clients came to us with the goal of restoring this home’s original Victorian charm while also increasing its livability and efficiency. From preserving the original built-in cabinetry and fir flooring, to adding a new dormer for the contemporary master bathroom, careful measures were taken to strike this balance between historic preservation and modern upgrading. Behind the home’s new exterior claddings, meticulously designed to preserve its Victorian aesthetic, the shell was air sealed and fitted with a vented rainscreen to increase energy efficiency and durability. With careful attention paid to the relationship between natural light and finished surfaces, the once dark kitchen was re-imagined into a cheerful space that welcomes morning conversation shared over pots of coffee. Every inch of this historical home was thoughtfully considered, prompting countless shared discussions between the home owners and ourselves. The pine flooring was originally stained a dark color. We sanded the floor and refinished with a light finish of thinned down floor enamel and three coats of water based polyurethane. The new cabinets from Brookhaven include open shelving, a popular trend right now. The butcher-block countertop captures the rustic feel of yesteryear, while some of the other hardware and appliances add just the right touch of sleekness, like the stainless steel farmhouse sink and dishwasher. Repainting your kitchen cabinets and adding some interesting door handles can make such a big difference! We paired that with a chevron pattern tile splash back and we are loving the result.

The countertops extend into the window sill behind the kitchen sink, adding dramatic flair. A large live edge island top is perfect for entertaining a small gathering.
