This vintage kitchen in a historic home was snug and closed off from other rooms in the home, including the family room. Opening the wall created a pass-through to the family room as well as ample countertop space and bar seating for 4. The new undercount sink in the beautiful granite countertop was enlarged to a single 36" bowl. The original Jen-Aire range had seen better days. Removing it opened up additional counter space as well as offered a smooth cook surface with down draft vent. The custom cabinets were solidly built with lots of custom features that new cabinets would not have offered. To lighten and brighten the room, the cabinets were painted with a Sherwin-Williams enamel. Vintage-style hardware was added to fit the period home. The desk was removed since it diminished counter space and the island cabinets were moved into its place. Doing this also opened up the center of the room, allowing better flow. Backsplash tile from Floor & Decor was added. Walls, backsplash, and cabinets were selected in matching colors to make the space appear larger by keeping the eye moving.

The classic Quarter-Sawn Oak cabinetry in a rich stain matches the client’s collection of Stickley furniture, creating continuity throughout the main level. Antique Fantasy granite countertops and simple subway tile compliment the shaker cabinets beautifully while the Artisan light fixtures along with the warm gold wall color complete the look of this overall welcoming kitchen.

No room for a silverware drawer? Add some small baskets under the wall cabinet to accommodate spoons, forks, knives, and serving spoons. An added bonus is that when you have a gathering, you can just set the baskets on the counter.

Small Galley Kitchen - traditional with some more modern touches, like the backsplash (a combination of glass and stone, available at Best Plumbing Tile & Stone). The cabinets are from IKEA, and the countertops are a granite called Minsk Green. We switched the corner sink base from a 90 degree corner to a 45 to allow for a standard sink and more comfortable work space. Sink is from Elkay, faucet is from Brizo.

When other firms refused we steped to the challenge of designing this small space kitchen! Midway through I lamented accepting but we plowed through to this fabulous conclusion. This kitchen was designed to function around a large family. The owners spend their weekend prepping large meals with extended family, so we gave them as much countertop space to prep and cook as we could. Tall cabinets, a secondary banks of drawers, and a bar area, were placed to the connecting space from the kitchen to the dining room for additional storage. Finally, a light wood and selective accents were chosen to give the space a light and airy feel.

This focus of this kitchen was to maximize space and finish with the homeowners dream selections of a brick backsplash and butcher block on the island. The mixed use of materials and taking the cabinets and crown molding all the way to the ceiling opened the space for the owner.
