The homeowners were very concerned about over-improving their modest split-level home built in 1961. They liked the “mid-century modern” feel and wanted to enhance that vibe. Top on their wish list was to replace the portable dishwasher with a built-in and add a peninsula for seating and workspace. To keep the labor cost down, the soffits and existing ceiling lighting was left intact. The first option was to keep the existing cabinets; however, the original layout did not allow adequate counter space on either side of the cooktop. After considered the price of new cabinets, they realized the value of having a brand new kitchen. The fun begins in the design phase. We chose the horizontal grain laminate to blend with the color of the existing woodwork in the home. The textured rhomboid shaped tile steals the show when accented with contrasting grout. The kitchen is a little mod and a little hip. And fits in perfectly as today’s “mid-century modern” home.

The vignette within Barrett Technology’s Design Center is one of its kind in the industry. Built to inspire and inform, this kitchen showcases today’s most innovative solutions in real world settings. All the technology (video, audio, lighting, security and HVAC) is controlled through a single app on the iPad. Even the motorized window shades, task & accent lighting are controlled via the Lutron Lighting Control System. It allows for lighting scene selection at the touch of a single button – including a “Cook” scene which when pressed will activate the lighting to an optimal 100% over the kitchen sink & island areas and will also drop the motorized spice rack from behind the wall cabinet. Als Nische angelegt, bietet die Küche einen direkten Zugang zum Wohnbereich, in dessen Übergang eine optisch harmonische Abgrenzung zugleich einen stilvollen Übergang bildet. Praktisch ist auch die Platzierung der Funktionalität, bei welcher der Kaffeevollautomat und der Weinkühlschrank direkt vom Essbereich aus genutzt werden können.

Die Wand zum Nachbarn wurde bis zur Decke mit Einbauschränken geschlossen. In der Ecke am Fenster ist ein Rollladenschrank eingebaut. Dort stehen die ständig genutzten Geräte, angeschlossen an Steckdosen im Schrank. Auf der durchgehenden Arbeitsplatte können sie einfach nach vorn gezogen werden und sind sofort einsatzbereit. In die Einbaufront ist auch der Kühlschrank integriert. Für dessen Belüftung hat der Schrank darüber eine geringere Tiefe und in der Deckenblende ist ein Lüftungsgitter eingelassen. Auch der Kaminschacht wurde so verkleidet, dass er wie ein Teil der Schrankanlage wirkt.

The kitchen, dining, and living areas share a common space but are separated by steps which mirror the outside terrain. The levels help to define each zone and function. Deep green stain on wire brushed oak adds a richness and texture to the clean lined cabinets.
