Creating an open space for entertaining in the garage apartment was a must for family visiting or guests renting the loft. The kitchen is open plan with the lounge and stairs, the custom industrial elements including the railing, island unit legs, light fixtures and shelf supports are all custom design and make.

A small compact kitchen, was designed following the industrial look of the property. The worktops have concrete effect. A big island was also included to allow for a bigger kitchen and also be an area of entertainment.

Im zentralen Raum teilen sich Küche, Essplatz und Sofaecke die Fläche. Die Küche wurde auf Maß vom Schreiner gefertigt. In der Zeile an der Wand sind – neben viel Stauraum – auch Backofen, Dampfgarer, Kühlschrank und Spülmaschine untergebracht. Die Spüle aus Edelstahl ist unter der Arbeitsplatte aus Feinsteinzeug eingebaut, die Abtropffläche wurde leicht vertieft und mit Gefälle ausgeführt. Die Rückwand wurde mit einem mattierten, rückseitig weiß lackierten Floatglas verkleidet. Hinter den Klappen über der Arbeitsfläche ist das täglich benutzte Geschirr jederzeit griffbereit. Eine eingelassene LED-Leiste an der Unterseite des Schranks beleuchtet die Arbeitsfläche gleichmäßig, ohne zu blenden. Als einziges Element in der Zeile ist der Schrank in Eiche ausgeführt. Damit wird er zum Blickpunkt, die umgebenden weißen Fronten treten in den Hintergrund. Der große Küchenblock in Eiche ist der Mittelpunkt und zugleich die Abtrennung zum Essplatz. Hier kann problemlos auch mit mehreren Personen gleichzeitig gekocht werden. Das Kochfeld ist flächenbündig in die Platte eingebaut und hat einen integrierten Muldenlüfter. Seitlich steht die Arbeitsplatte über und bildet mit zwei Hockern einen kleinen Sitzplatz. Zur Küche hin bieten Schubladen viel Platz für Kochgeschirr und -besteck. In den Fächern in Richtung Essplatz sind Geschirr und Gläser untergebracht. Aus praktischen Erwägungen sind die Schränke der häufig genutzten Fächer in der Küche mit Griffen versehen. Grifflos sind nur die Schränke ganz oben und die Fächer im Küchenblock in Richtung Essplatz. Für den Essplatz wurde eine Sitzbank in eine Nische eingepasst. Sie ist aus BauBuche gebaut, die Hochkantlamellen dieses Plattenmaterials erzeugen eine interessante Streifenoptik. Die Sitzflächen sind als Klappen ausgebildet, darunter ist jede Menge Platz für Spiele und Werkzeug entstanden. Hinter der Rückenlehne ist eine LED-Leiste für die indirekte Beleuchtung der Wand eingelassen. Für die Fläche über der Bank wählten wir eine Fototapete aus, die das Farbspektrum der Wohnung aufgreift und dem Raum mehr Tiefe gibt. Die Tischplatte besteht ebenfalls aus BauBuche, das Tischgestell dafür wurde vom Schlosser angefertigt. Es besteht aus einer Bodenplatte und darauf zwei senkrechten Platten, die mit einem Streifen verbunden sind. Diese filigrane Form bietet viel Beinfreiheit beim Benutzen der Bank. Der verwendete Schwarzstahl ist transparent lackiert und ähnelt in seiner Farbigkeit der Arbeitsplatte.

Der von allen Seiten bedienbare Würfel bildet den Mittelpunkt des Hauses. Er dient nicht nur als Schrankwand der Küche mit Kühlgerät und Backofen, sondern beinhaltet zugleich die Garderobe auf der Rückseite und das Reduit im Herzen. Die materialgleiche gegenüberliegende Treppe bietet ebenso Stauraum für den täglichen Gebrauch und ist für den Gast als solche nicht wahrzunehmen. This beautiful combination of rooms was part of a whole house design that we put together to flow within the owner’s overall vision of modern style and functionality. THE SETUP The house was partially built when the owner purchased it, so we tweaked the layout to fit his needs. Like so many homeowners today, our client is a casual diner and would rather not have space dedicated as a formal dining room. Island seating and a large table off the kitchen make more sense for his lifestyle. Our client wanted a clean, contemporary look with a layout that works for one person preparing meals most of the time, but adaptable for entertaining at different scales at other times. THE RENEWED SPACE The first thing we did was design a bar in the space formerly designated for a formal dining room. It is open to the front entry foyer on one side and flows easily into the butler’s pantry on the other side. A TV for sports viewing is centered between a full-sized wine cooler and a glass cabinet for barware. The u-shaped bar top seats five people comfortably and hides the lower bar prep countertop from view from the entry. The butler’s pantry is situated between the kitchen eating area and the front bar. The walls on the sides of this area were opened to help the areas flow together into one great room. An icemaker and under-counter refrigerator drawers were incorporated into the butler’s pantry to help it function as a place to set up drinks etc. to be used in the kitchen eating area. The floating shelves also helped open the space up. Across from the butler’s area is a clean contemporary powder room with indirect lighting below floating cabinetry to complete the look. The kitchen uses an array of man-made materials for ease of maintenance and durability. The layout includes a perfect work triangle for a one-cook kitchen with all the amenities. A range with double ovens, a built-in microwave and a warming drawer are all conveniently located. The countertop is a man-made quartz that looks like rugged concrete. The refrigerator and freezer are below a decorative niche, which gives them a furniture-type appearance. Across from the kitchen is a family room with a fireplace surrounded by a quartz material and wooden wall panels that match the kitchen’s countertop and refrigerator cabinetry. THE RENEWED SPACE The overall effect is a beautiful area with separate spaces for living life comfortably and artistically. Everything flows together, facilitating life’s daily needs and a wide range of purposeful gatherings with family and friends.

Birch Plywood Kitchen island with recessed J handles and exposed plywood edges and a stainless steel worktop. Bright yellow and green cooking utensils sit in a turquoise ceramic pot on the island.
