ASID Design Excellence First Place Residential – Kitchen and Bathroom: Michael Merrill Design Studio was approached three years ago by the homeowner to redesign her kitchen. Although she was dissatisfied with some aspects of her home, she still loved it dearly. As we discovered her passion for design, we began to rework her entire home--room by room, top to bottom.

The challenge of merging contemporary design with a classic traditional interior is emblematic of the vitality experienced in the evolution of Philadelphia’s urban fabric. The design of this Center City apartment engages a rich discourse between the new and the existing, focusing on areas of the residence that contradicted the new owners’ aesthetic and lifestyle. The elevator opens to the center of the spacious living area that includes the foyer, kitchen and living room. The serene, geometric character of the foyer enhances the sense of arrival – offering a moment to contemplate the owners’ art, the interplay of the old and the new, and the subtleties of light. The kitchen, while fully functional, willingly and quietly participates in the composition. Symmetry and asymmetry are seamlessly woven. The depth and endurance of daily experiences are the ingredients that transform architecture into a vital framework for living. As it relates to a home, the framework requires a resonate balance of comfort and drama, achieved here with a cast of dynamic materials and details that subtly collaborate in simple composition. Kitchen remodel design with combination of Cherry Frontier finishes and painted Ivory White Koch cabinetry. Silestone Ethereal Glow Quartz counters, KitchenAid appliances, COREtec Barnwood Rustic Pine vinyl plank flooring, and Daltile Sublimity Namaste herringbone wall tile also featured. Goals The clients main goal was more space. They desired a new kitchen that was large enough to fit their growing family and to update other rooms in their home to fit their contemporary style. Our Design Solution In order to enlarge the kitchen, we had to build a new addition. The original kitchen was just too small and had no where to expand to within the house. With moving the entire kitchen into the addition, there was now room to create a mudroom and a new bathroom. Above the new kitchen, we gave the client a new master suite. We used white cabinets, a custom wood counter, and gray back splash tile, to give the kitchen the contemporary feel the clients were seeking. C.J South Photography

Kitchen remodeling project where the homeowners elected to upgrade their kitchen to a more modern look. The cabinet boxes are Bridgewood frameless and the doors are Northern Contours Level Series in Acrylic White. The upper cabinets are all push to open. The kitchen countertop was done in a 3” thick Cambria quartz done in Britanicca and the island legs have 3” waterfall legs. The bar area was done in Northern Contours acrylic and the glass shelves are backlit with LED’s so the shelf illuminates. Some other special features that were done with this remodel is a butler’s pantry, ice machine, microwave drawer and a full height quartz backsplash.
