The previous kitchen was the result of an 80's remodel, complete with dropped ceiling. We opened up the space and re-configured the entire kitchen to include a large island. The cabinetry is all custom. Double oven and range from Miele. SubZero fridge. The backsplash tile is from Heath Ceramics in LA. The Velux skylights are operable and have solar-powered shades.

THE SETUP Senior Designer Diana Burton’s client loved her sixties-era home – it just needed some work. The cozy galley kitchen was narrow and mostly closed off from the family room. A pass-through window served as a limited pipeline for treats and chatter. The appliances were failing, too. It was simply time for an overhaul. Design Objectives: Remove load bearing wall and open kitchen to the family room Omit large unused fireplace in family room Increase work surfaces and overall storage solutions Dedicated small countertop appliance storage Seating for 3 or 4 at island Add pantry storage Offer solution for lack of mudroom Upgrade all appliances THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Finding a location to hide structural support for new beam Reworking awkward configuration of existing walls Adding a walk-in pantry Creating mudroom storage Allowing room for large sectional in family room Design Solutions: Add a discreet column by the fridge to hide essential support Flush out wall by bath to be even with the range wall, where the new walk in pantry exists Use void space behind new wall for large appliance garage Create combination walk in pantry/mudroom by adding bench with shoe storage and hooks Maintain island depth for comfortable seating without infringing on space for the sectional THE RENEWED SPACE This cramped, dated kitchen has a new lease on life! Opening it to the family room dramatically transformed the space. Diana’s client now has plenty of storage, a big island for food prep, and an open-concept space that’s perfect for entertaining and hanging out with friends and family.

In order to showcase the tile backsplash, the clients elected to forgo upper cabinets and instead utilize open shelving. These two pullouts, designed to hold spices and oils, are conveniently located adjacent to the six-burner gas range.

Long lead times and delays are a new normal. At European Kitchen Center, we adapt our business to new standards. We carefully planned this project to avoid extensive periods without cooking. With our help, the client could source and purchase all necessary products. The demolition started when we had cabinetry and all other parts in our possession. As a result, quick installation, pleased client, and a stunning kitchen. The client has opted for a two-tone finish; white lacquer and stunning wood veneer. It features handle-less cabinetry, contemporary design, and the latest in modern kitchen gadgets. The most significant change of the Bridlemile Midcentury project took place here in the kitchen. We united what were previously three separate spaces (laundry/mudroom, kitchen, and nook) into one grand cooking and entertainment space. As much as we love and respect the original 1954 vision, times have changed- especially when it comes to household activities such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. In addition to knocking down the mudroom/laundry walls, we expanded the opening between kitchen and dining spaces to showcase the southern view and maximize daylight. Incorporating a large island enabled us to centralize the sink to face the dining area, yard, and view beyond. And [as a reflection of our era] we achieved a more proportional balance between the kitchen, dining, and living room volumes.

The table was made from Peruvian walnut with a fantastic cashmere finish. The base to the table is a metal with a custom finish. The bar area was a built in banquette which was difficult to get in and out of. Modernizing this space to a bar area opened up the entire space for socializing and brought more light through the windows.

Having designed the kitchen in their previous home (see Davis Rockwell Kitchen) - which they loved for many years – this couple came back to us with one main request, to design a similar but more upscale interpretation for their new home. As with the previous kitchen, the clients wanted an open space for entertaining and dedicated areas to showcase their large collection of art pieces. The existing builder grade kitchen didn’t fit their personal style or wish list. Knowing that the client’s intention was for this house to be their forever home, it was vital to give them a design that worked well now as well as for future needs. Knowing they love to entertain, we recommended a 5’ Galley Workstation for its flexibility to serve a variety of tasks from everyday wash station to party central with just a quick change of accessories. Located in the heart of the home, the kitchen is visible from all angles and needed to present a clean, flush look with the cabinets and appliances. Special features include LED strip lighting in the upper niche cabinets to highlight special art pieces. Beautiful walnut panels wrap the cabinetry and serve a dual purpose around the fold-up wall cabinets by the cooktop; they provide just enough depth for custom spice shelves.
