Character and charm are abundant in this main floor remodel. The home edged toward a traditional style going in and we chose to honor this feel and carry it throughout while updating the space. From a space-planning perspective, the first volley was to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room and let the light shine in. And shine in it does! The numerous windows stayed in place and now do their job allowing light to flow from room to room. Those very windows are trimmed in natural white oak and paired with arched wood-cased openings to add warmth to the scene. Wood beams between the kitchen and the family room and new stone on the fireplace add a nuanced rustic touch while keeping with the overall feel of the home. These organic elements beautifully offset the crisp whites and blues found everywhere you look. A patterned tile offers visual interest in the backsplash and travels from the counters to the ceiling bringing the eye with it. Orb-like woven pendant lights lend texture and interest to the marble topped island and brushed gold accent task lighting hangs above the apron sink. When a traditional style is held in high regard, and implemented well, it is nothing short of priceless.

4 feet was all that was added to this kitchen, however, relocating the powder room and opening it up to the new family room addition made all the difference in the world. Described as serene by many that visit the morning sun floods the kitchen in the morning and the evening sun coming in from the family room and full southern exposure over the sink make the lighting somewhat unnecessary. The white beaded inset cabinets with traditional hardware were selected to keep the space in alignment with the design intent of the original 1920's detailing of the home. The lights over the island were salvaged from a 1920 brokerage house in Newark, NJ. the shade over the farmhouse sink was salvaged from the original home and a new fixture was made to showcase it. Hand painted ceramic tile was selected for the backsplash.

The kitchen island features a traditional enameled cast iron undermount sink with an ornate gooseneck faucet. The main wall of cabinetry has extra tall uppers with sleek recessed panel doors, decorative craftsman support brackets, and a gray subway tile backsplash with a herringbone detail insert behind the Wolf range. By incorporating floating shelving and other creative storage ideas from IKEA, the space took on a whole new life, she says. “Before, it was dark and boring with Formica counters. The kitchen now looks modern and fresh! It reflects the decor in the rest of the house and is now the heart of our home,” she says. West Des Moines two story homes create challenges for homeowners with layouts including small rooms that don’t seem to flow together. The family that lives in this home found that entertaining and gathering in the kitchen was almost impossible with the current layout and asked for an addition to solve the problem. After listening to the challenges of that they faced and working with the homeowners, a new solution emerged without an addition, reducing the overall budget and allowing the whole main floor to be updated. By removing the wall between the kitchen and dinning room, the team was able to design an island for family and friends to congregate around. Then by flanking the island with a large commercial range surrounded by a custom backsplash and custom hood a picture perfect kitchen was born. Lastly by repeating elements within the range hood, island and fireplace, the team was able to create unity throughout the space. This visually makes the space feel larger and feels like the addition was built
