This single family home sits on a tight, sloped site. Within a modest budget, the goal was to provide direct access to grade at both the front and back of the house. The solution is a multi-split-level home with unconventional relationships between floor levels. Between the entrance level and the lower level of the family room, the kitchen and dining room are located on an interstitial level. Within the stair space “floats” a small bathroom. The generous stair is celebrated with a back-painted red glass wall which treats users to changing refractive ambient light throughout the house. Black brick, grey-tinted glass and mirrors contribute to the reasonably compact massing of the home. A cantilevered upper volume shades south facing windows and the home’s limited material palette meant a more efficient construction process. Cautious landscaping retains water run-off on the sloping site and home offices reduce the client’s use of their vehicle. The house achieves its vision within a modest footprint and with a design restraint that will ensure it becomes a long-lasting asset in the community. Photo by Tom Arban

We opened up the kitchen to the entry and stairwell by removing the wall between the kitchen and the hall, moving the closets out of the hall, and opening up the staircase to the lower level with a half wall, which created a more open floor plan. We further expanded the space visually by adding a wall of sliding glass doors to the porch at one end of the kitchen, which flooded the room with natural light and pulled the outdoors inside. Designer, Joel Snayd. Beach house on Tybee Island in Savannah, GA. This two-story beach house was designed from the ground up by Rethink Design Studio -- architecture + interior design. The first floor living space is wide open allowing for large family gatherings. Old recycled beams were brought into the space to create interest and create natural divisions between the living, dining and kitchen. The crisp white butt joint paneling was offset using the cool gray slate tile below foot. The stairs and cabinets were painted a soft gray, roughly two shades lighter than the floor, and then topped off with a Carerra honed marble. Apple red stools, quirky art, and fun colored bowls add a bit of whimsy and fun. Wall Color: SW extra white 7006 Stair Run Color: BM Sterling 1591 Floor: 6x12 Squall Slate (local tile supplier)

This Kitchen is a hybrid of stock and custom. The cabinet boxes and hardware is a Ikea frame and all the doors drawers and panels have been made in our custom cabinet shop. We also fabricated the 4 floating shelfs out of a single solid walnut slab. The counters are Carrara marble as well as the Moroccan style back splash. the floors are a natural slate. This spacious, coastal style kitchen has an abundance of natural light which illuminates the natural tones & textures of the slate flooring, marble countertops, stone hearth, and wooden elements within this space. This kitchen is equipped with a Wolf range, microwave and warming drawers, and two built-in Sub-Zero refrigerators. With breath taking views throughout the kitchen and living area, it becomes the perfect oasis.

A solid teak side table is held up by an antique hydraulic cylinder. The homeowner wanted to use her unique finds in her eclectic style kitchen design.
