The challenges: This was a small space centrally located and needed to provide a big impact for busy professionals that love to cook. The ceiling was vaulted creating a distraction. Top of clients wish list was a walk in pantry and some space to display some pottery and a shell collection. Solutions: Since the Clients were very in tune with their design style, and leaned toward a dressed up industrial a dramatic dark color was a no brainer, as well as a quartz Counter top that resembles concrete. I gave the illusion of a huge walk in pantry by surrounding it with display shelves, keeping the doors recessed, and purchased antique leaded geometric glass doors with special hardware to enrich the look. The contrasting color on the wall behind the open shelves is a watery look for the shells and repeated on the interior of the pantry giving it an amazing feel inside. The micro is stashed inside the pantry as well. This cabinet with drawers below houses all the clients dishes and the light behind the corduroy glass provides a beautiful play with light. Last but certainly not least was to flatten out the ceiling which brought your focus back to this dramatic kitchen that does a lot of heavy lifting for these happy homeowners!! I love a challenge and was thrilled to work on this kitchen along with 2 baths.

Originally a church and community centre, this Northside residence has been lovingly renovated by an enthusiastic young couple into a unique family home. The design brief for this kitchen design was to create a larger than life industrial style kitchen that would not look lost in the enormous 8.3meter wide “assembly hall” area of this unassuming 1950’s suburban home. The inclusion of a large island that was proportionate to the space was a must have for the family. The collation of different materials, textures and design features in this kitchen blend to create a functional, family-friendly, industrial style kitchen design that feels warm and inviting and entirely at home in its surroundings. The clients desire for dark charcoal colour cabinetry is softened with the use of the ‘Bluegrass’ colour cabinets under the rough finish solid wood island bench. The sleek black handles on the island contrast the Bluegrass cabinet colour while tying the island in with the handless charcoal colour cabinets on the back wall. With limited above bench wall space, the majority of storage is accommodated in 50-65kg capacity soft closing drawers under deep benchtops maximising the storage potential of the area. The 1meter wide appliance cabinet has ample storage for small appliances in tall deep drawers under bench height while a pair of pocket doors above bench level open to reveal bench space for a toaster and coffee machine with a microwave space and shelving above. This kitchen design earned our designer Anne Ellard, a spot in the final of KBDI’s 2017 Designer Awards. Award winners will be announced at a Gala event in Adelaide later this year. Now in its ninth year, the KBDi Designer Awards is a well-established and highly regarded national event on the Australian design calendar. The program recognises the professionalism and talent of Australian kitchen and bathroom designers. What the clients said: ” The end result of our experience with Anne and Kitchens by Kathie is a space that people walk into and everyone says “Wow!”. As well as being great to look at, it’s a pleasure to use, the space has both great form and function. We were asked to help transform a cluttered, half-finished common area to an organized, multi-functional homework/play/lounge space for this family of six. They were so pleased with the desk setup for the kids, that we created a similar workspace for their office. In the midst of designing these living areas, they had a leak in their kitchen, so we jumped at the opportunity to give them a brand new one. This project was a true collaboration between owner and designer, as it was done completely remotely.

This kitchen features black cabinetry that is highlighted with white backspash tiles and a white stone countertop. Brass tap and leavers match the brass in the island light sconces.

This kitchen is a great mix of clean, modern and classic design that maximizes the space and welcomes you into the dining room, making it ideal for entertaining. Quartz countertops provide a nice contrast against black shaker style cabinets with ample storage in soft close drawers. Vertical handmade subway tile give a new twist on the classic accented by walnut open shelving flanking the stove workspace. Brass hardware throughout adds a timeless polished look.

Expanding and updating the kitchen was our top priority – the new layout was designed to straddle the original house and the addition, creating work zones rather than the traditional work triangle. The modified galley layout more than doubled their countertop area and storage space. Extending the kitchen into the addition took full advantage of the vaulted ceilings and light-filled space. To improve flow and connectivity, we opened up a wall between the old kitchen and the front entry hall providing a straight path from front door to the new mudroom/drop zone and kitchen beyond. A door from the dining room into the kitchen was shifted to allow for a more generous kitchen. The beautifully veined Calacatta Eiffel quartz counters and backsplash provide visual contrast with the black cabinetry and keep the space from feeling too heavy. A continuous ledge and floating shelves replace traditional uppers for a more open and modern feel. Stained wood is used throughout, from the bench top, to shelving, trim and custom millwork; it brings in a natural element and helps unite all of the spaces. A hood with a custom Venetian plaster finish is flanked by vintage inspired sconces and provides a stunning focal point in the room. A deep nook is home to a ‘bubble box’ that dispenses cold sparkling or still water on demand – the marble tile backsplash further differentiates this beverage zone. The brushed brass hardware stands out against the dark cabinets and adds a touch of warmth. With seating for three at the counter and the inclusion of a breakfast area banquette (with drawers), the home is ideal for family time and relaxed gatherings with friends.
