Originally a church and community centre, this Northside residence has been lovingly renovated by an enthusiastic young couple into a unique family home. The design brief for this kitchen design was to create a larger than life industrial style kitchen that would not look lost in the enormous 8.3meter wide “assembly hall” area of this unassuming 1950’s suburban home. The inclusion of a large island that was proportionate to the space was a must have for the family. The collation of different materials, textures and design features in this kitchen blend to create a functional, family-friendly, industrial style kitchen design that feels warm and inviting and entirely at home in its surroundings. The clients desire for dark charcoal colour cabinetry is softened with the use of the ‘Bluegrass’ colour cabinets under the rough finish solid wood island bench. The sleek black handles on the island contrast the Bluegrass cabinet colour while tying the island in with the handless charcoal colour cabinets on the back wall. With limited above bench wall space, the majority of storage is accommodated in 50-65kg capacity soft closing drawers under deep benchtops maximising the storage potential of the area. The 1meter wide appliance cabinet has ample storage for small appliances in tall deep drawers under bench height while a pair of pocket doors above bench level open to reveal bench space for a toaster and coffee machine with a microwave space and shelving above. This kitchen design earned our designer Anne Ellard, a spot in the final of KBDI’s 2017 Designer Awards. Award winners will be announced at a Gala event in Adelaide later this year. Now in its ninth year, the KBDi Designer Awards is a well-established and highly regarded national event on the Australian design calendar. The program recognises the professionalism and talent of Australian kitchen and bathroom designers. What the clients said: ” The end result of our experience with Anne and Kitchens by Kathie is a space that people walk into and everyone says “Wow!”. As well as being great to look at, it’s a pleasure to use, the space has both great form and function. Anne was extremely responsive to any issues or concerns that cropped up during the design/build process which made the whole process much smoother and enjoyable. The overall vision for the kitchen is a modern, slightly edgy space that is still warm and inviting. As a designer, I like to push people out of their comfort zones. We’ve done that a few ways with this kitchen – Ebony and matte gray cabinets, mixing cabinet and countertop materials, and mixing metals. We’ve all seen and done the white kitchen for the last 10 years. I wanted to demonstrate that a black kitchen is functional and dramatic and not the dark cave everyone fears. To soften the black, we’ve incorporated organic elements like natural woods, handmade backsplash tiles, brass and the flowing, organic patterns of the fabrics.

As part of a rear extension to a 20th Century Art Deco property in Middlesex, this minimalist open plan kitchen was designed by Jo Johal, managing director of Vogue Kitchens using furniture by German brand, Leicht. Designed as a room in which to cook and entertain, the handleless kitchen maximises space and minimises clutter. Leading directly to an extensive garden via a wall of bi-fold doors that run the entire length of the kitchen which features Carbon Grey matt lacquered tall door fronts with and Platinum White laminate door and drawer fronts for the kitchen island. Carbon grey-fronted storage abounds in this kitchen which features floor to ceiling cabinetry including a full-size contemporary pantry, further cupboards with pull out units and shelving together with a tall Le Mans corner unit to house an array of pans. Housed within is a fully integrated Liebherr Fridge and Freezer. Facing the garden the run of cabinetry continues with more storage units that surround a bank of Miele ovens – two 60cm multifunction pyrolytic ovens side-by-side topped by, a 45cm steam oven and a 45cm microwave. A five metre by three metre kitchen island faces out to the garden and incorporates a wet area for food preparation at one end, surface cooking on a Miele 80cm induction hob take place at the centre and informal dining takes place at the other as the Quartzform worktop features an extended overhang with bar stools beneath. Within the undercounter cabinetry is a Miele 60cm Dishwasher and a Caple 60cm 2-Zone Wine Cooler. Directly above is a Gutmann Claro integrated Ceiling Extractor. Behind the island is a further tall cupboard in carbon grey with pocket doors. By day, when closed, this forms a continuation of the run of cabinetry on the other side of the kitchen door. By night, when the pocket doors are folded back into recesses, an entire full-size backlit glass-backed bar area is revealed, with glass shelves and pull-out drawers beneath.
