This client needed a place to entertain by the pool. They had already done their “inside” kitchen with Bilotta and so returned to design their outdoor space. All summer they spend a lot of time in their backyard entertaining guests, day and night. But before they had their fully designed outdoor space, whoever was in charge of grilling would feel isolated from everyone else. They needed one cohesive space to prep, mingle, eat and drink, alongside their pool. They did not skimp on a thing – they wanted all the bells and whistles: a big Wolf grill, plenty of weather resistant countertop space for dining (Lapitec - Grigio Cemento, by Eastern Stone), an awning (Durasol Pinnacle II by Gregory Sahagain & Sons, Inc.) that would also keep bright light out of the family room, lights, and an indoor space where they could escape the bugs if needed and even watch TV. The client was thrilled with the outcome - their complete vision for an ideal outdoor entertaining space came to life. Cabinetry is Lynx Professional Storage Line. When RJohnston Interiors got the call to design a replacement for the client’s 1970’s kitchen, we were excited when they defined their style as an eclectic mix of Japanese antiques, tribal art, and California ranch with an itch to go a bit contemporary. The result is a kitchen that feels and functions like twice the size in the original footprint, and works as well for one as with guests.

Modern kitchen opens to a large dining area with a sliding door to an adjacent patio. Microwave is located in the island and there is a large pantry closet to the left of the stove. Finishes include an 18x18 black slate floor, Kraftmaid Venezia cabinets, Italian "linen" tile backsplash in random widths and "wood floor" pattern.

Builder installed kitchen in 2002 was stripped of inappropriate trim and therefore original ceiling was revealed. New stainless steel backsplash and hood and vent wrap was designed. Shaker style cabinets had their insets filled in so that era appropriate flat front cabinets were the finished look.
