Photos By: Amy Birrer The home featured was built in 1956 in the height of the atomic age and we wanted to bring it back to its roots. The idea here is to pay homage to the 1950s without repeating them verbatim. In lieu of an aquamarine refrigerator, we used a large white AGA with modern lines and encased it in an aquamarine cabinet. We picked up the same color on the shelving on either side of the stainless Viking range. The cabinets are a framed inset construction with slab drawers and doors. The flat doors and drawers are in keeping with minimal embellishment, but using a framed inset cabinet adds interest to the space and breaks up the conformity.

Our client for this project is a financier who has a beautiful home in the suburbs but wanted a second home in NYC as he spent 2-4 nights a week in the city. He wanted an upscale pied-à-terre that was soothing, moody, textural, comfortable, and contemporary while also being family-friendly as his college-age children might use it too. The apartment is a new build in Tribeca, and our New York City design studio loved working on this contemporary project. The entryway welcomes you with dark gray, deeply textured wallpaper and statement pieces like the angular mirror and black metal table that are an ode to industrial NYC style. The open kitchen and dining are sleek and flaunt statement metal lights, while the living room features textured contemporary furniture and a stylish bar cart. The bedroom is an oasis of calm and relaxation, with the textured wallpaper playing the design focal point. Virginia AIA Merit Award for Excellence in Residential Design | What appeared to be a simple, worn-out, early 20th century stucco cottage was to be modestly renovated as a weekend retreat. But when the contractor and architects began pulling away the interior wall finishes, they discovered a log cabin at its core (believed to date as far back as the 1780’s) and a newer addition (circa 1920’s) at the rear where the site slopes down. Initial plans were scrapped, and a new project was born that honors the original construction while accommodating new infrastructure and the clients’ modern tastes. A galley kitchen of concrete and reclaimed wood lines one wall of the walkout basement. The existing concrete slab was acid washed, a window seat added to look out on the lower terrace, the stair stripped of paint, and the minimalist line of the new stair rail extended to connect the basement to the two floors above.

Flat panel wood cabinet doors and gray painted drawers share a caesarstone countertop and stainless steel backsplash with an orbital sanded finish, for easier maintenance. Open c-shaped shelves provide space for storage, while keeping the open feel of the new design.
