It is sometimes a surprise what beauty can lurk under the surface of a room. A client with a 1970s kitchen and eat-in area cut up by an unwieldy peninsula was desperate for it to reflect her love of all things English-and-French-Manor-Home. Working closely with my client, we removed the peninsula in favor of a lovely free-standing island that we painted a shade of French Blue. This is topped with Old World sink hardware (note the ceramic HOT and COLD medallions on the faucets!) and a gorgeous marble counter with a very special edge profile that evokes an antique French Boulangerie counter from the 1910s. Pendants with patinaed metal shades over the island further the charming Old World feel. Handmade white and blue tiles laid in a quilted diamond pattern cover the backsplash, and the remainder of the cabinetry at the perimeter is in a warm cream tone. The eat-in near the fireplace got a cozy treatment with custom seat cushions and window seat bench cushions in a classic blue-and-white Toile de Jouy matching the island stools. The nearby living room got a similar treatment. We removed dark wood paneling and dark carpeting in favor of a light sky blue wall and lighter wood flooring. A new rug with the appearance of an heirloom, a new grand-scaled sofa, and some of my client’s precious antiques helped take the room from 70s rec room to English Sitting Room. Fun Transitional kitchen. Marries the bold custom blue lower cabinets with the traditional white upper cabinets. Gorgeous brass accents tie both colors in together. The subway tile lends to a more modern theme while the marble stone material adds to the timelessness of the space.

The use of handleless doors and features such as the low bench area with open shelves, beside the new picture window, combines practicality with stylish elegance. To keep the space clutter free, áine came up with an ingenious solution. ‘In one corner we designed an appliance nook where kitchen items such as the kettle, toaster, mixers, etc. can be stored. Above this we put a mini larder, finished with bi-folding doors for ease of access. This area is well lit with task lighting. In keeping with the contemporary theme we used contrasting colours, a combination of light grey on the main wall and Maura chose dark navy blue for the island unit which was custom sprayed.

Classic Palette: Black & White Kitchen Sometimes forgoing colour for a classic palette can really pay off. This lovely family home is taken to the next level of chic with its classic black and white kitchen. Gorgeous classic cabinetry has been selected, with shaker doors and detailed panelling on the island. Being only a small space, the overhead cupboards remain handless to ensure the kitchen does not appear cluttered and the gorgeous Quantum Quartz stone benchtop is repeated on the splashback so as not to distract the eye. Sticking true to the colour palette and classic feel the client selected any chef’s dream oven, a SMEG’s iconic freestanding Victoria Oven. The black Zip Tap gives modern convenience while blending with the aesthetics of the kitchen. We love the slim, black handles by Castella once again ensuring the eye is not distracted. And the beautiful, fluted farmhouse style sink by ABI Interiors is a subtle change of texture and interest while being the pinnacle of a classical kitchen. Being a small kitchen, the client used smart joinery to ensure no space was wasted. With a purpose-built pantry to house drinks station keeps counters clutter free. Drawers with glass fronts are used in the pantry, ensuring items aren’t lost. Hafele LeMans corner unit is used to get into those pesky corners, and two-tier pantry pullouts ensure the smaller spaces are maximized. And Hafele Pull-Out Rubbish Bins means everything has its place. We love the client’s choice of bar stools, gorgeous black velvet with gold tip feet, the only step away from the black and white palette, they are classic and chic. The pendant lights with their handblown glass and metal feature are keeping with the classic styling. All this is taking place upon a lovely canvas of timber look tiles, laid in a classic Chevron pattern that runs the length of the home, giving added visual interest to this gorgeous family home located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

The stained wood ceiling in the recessed tray does a great job of creating a room within a room in the open concept space. This is something that warms up all the white and keeps a good balance of fresh and earthy at the same time.

Rodwin Architecture & Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, USA Interior design, space planning and architectural details converge thoughtfully in this transformative project. A 15-year old, 9,000 sf. home with generic interior finishes and odd layout needed bold, modern, fun and highly functional transformation for a large bustling family. To redefine the soul of this home, texture and light were given primary consideration. Elegant contemporary finishes, a warm color palette and dramatic lighting defined modern style throughout. A cascading chandelier by Stone Lighting in the entry makes a strong entry statement. Walls were removed to allow the kitchen/great/dining room to become a vibrant social center. A minimalist design approach is the perfect backdrop for the diverse art collection. Yet, the home is still highly functional for the entire family. We added windows, fireplaces, water features, and extended the home out to an expansive patio and yard. The cavernous beige basement became an entertaining mecca, with a glowing modern wine-room, full bar, media room, arcade, billiards room and professional gym. Bathrooms were all designed with personality and craftsmanship, featuring unique tiles, floating wood vanities and striking lighting. This project was a 50/50 collaboration between Rodwin Architecture and Kimball Modern

Our client purchased an apartment on the top floor of an old 1930’s building with expansive views of the San Francisco Bay from the palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Bridge, to Alcatraz Island. The existing apartment retained some of the original detailing and the owner wished to enhance and build on the existing traditional themes that existed there. We reconfigured the apartment to add another bedroom, relocated the kitchen, and remodeled the remaining spaces. The design included moving the kitchen to free up space to add an additional bedroom. We also did the interior design and detailing for the two existing bathrooms. The master bath was reconfigured entirely. We detailed and guided the selection of all of the fixtures, finishes and lighting design for a complete and integrated interior design of all of the spaces.

Continuing the story of this captivating kitchen from a fresh angle, the blend of contemporary veneer and classic shaker-style cabinet doors remains effortlessly chic. The mesmerizing arches on the island and wall cabinets create a harmonious design rhythm that beckons you to explore further. Every view reveals a new layer of its timeless appeal.
