This custom new construction home located in Fox Trail, Illinois was designed for a sizeable family who do a lot of extended family entertaining. There was a strong need to have the ability to entertain large groups and the family cooks together. The family is of Indian descent and because of this there were a lot of functional requirements including thoughtful solutions for dry storage and spices. The architecture of this project is more modern aesthetic, so the kitchen design followed suit. The home sits on a wooded site and has a pool and lots of glass. Taking cues from the beautiful site, O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago focused the design on bringing the outdoors in with the goal of achieving an organic feel to the room. They used solid walnut timber with a very natural stain so the grain of the wood comes through. There is a very integrated feeling to the kitchen. The volume of the space really opens up when you get to the kitchen. There was a lot of thoughtfulness on the scaling of the cabinetry which around the perimeter is nestled into the architecture. obrienharris.com

The kitchen redesign with a new eat-in kitchen nook with built-in banquettes upholstered in leather. To add an element of fun we played with the tufted button colours. Subtle details are something we love to add to projects to create layers of interest in each space. Its important to keep spaces fun. The natural light in this space is spectacular.

This gut renovation of a 1960's galley kitchen opens the kitchen to the living room and allows natural light to flood the space. All new recessed lighting in a drop ceiling with LED linear lights installed in the reveal create a floating appearance. Appliances are integrated into the cabinetry to reduce visual clutter. A simple, clean-lined and modern aesthetic will stand the test of time.

The kitchen is designed for two serious home chefs who often entertain guests for dinner parties. Merging the kitchen and dining room into a singular space was a strategic design decision to both foster their style of ‘chefs table’ entertaining, and also make the most efficient use of valuable floor space - a common consideration in most Toronto homes. The table becomes an island-like surface for additional prep space, and also as the surface upon which the meal is eventually enjoyed.

The new owners wanted a combined family room and kitchen with vistas of Glover Archbold Park which is just behind their house. The original kitchen was interior and was only about 8’ x 8’ in size. We took the existing first floor space that was a small kitchen, family room, half bath and entry foyer and moved the kitchen. We removed structural bearing walls and replaced them with a steel structural beam to open up a 20’ x 20’ space that became a kitchen/breakfast/family room area. The previous small glass family room used single glazed glass windows and door. . The cabinetry feels like pieces of furniture rather than wall-to-wall kitchen cabinets. We also built a built in hutch that separates the kitchen/family room from the dining room. The kitchen design is a classic modern design. Photographer: Sam Kittner
