Design by Mark Lind Project Management by Jon Strain Photo by Patrick Wong Integrating structural requirements and exacting finishes with the numerous unique architectural elements was a significant challenge overcome by careful planning and coordination. A high degree of detail went into planning for the rough-in stage to allow for lights in the new pair structural steel beam that separates the kitchen from the living room, for the dual custom concrete bars at the kitchen and dining areas, and for the structural supports of the awnings.

The owners of this kitchen do a lot of baking/cooking so they needed plenty of prep areas, a double oven and convenient storage. As world travelers they also want to display some of their collected artifacts.

A new bay was added to the garage and the original space was converted into a new utility room, guest bath, and pantry. The kitchen was completely gutted and with the living room wall removed, doubled in size. The adjacent breakfast area was pushed farther into the rear yard. The finishes are characterized by compositions of overlapping forms and a mix of materials, including sparkling black granite countertops immediately adjacent to cast concrete bars. Rich mesquite floors that run throughout much of the first floor unify this large and eclectic project. A high degree of detail went into planning for the rough-in stage to allow for lights in the new paired structural steel beams that separate the kitchen from the living room and for the dual custom concrete bars at the kitchen and dining areas. The result of this renovation is a spacious, contemporary kitchen that fits the lifestyle of this active family. Design: Mark Lind Project Management: Jon Strain Photography: Paul Finkel, 2012 Located at the lowest point of the property, with a dry creek running behind the yard, this 1980’s era home had experienced several serious flooding events that the owners wanted to permanently fix, as well as updating the finishes, transforming the home’s interior and exterior appearance, and adding more square footage. The two-story home was almost completely gutted, a process that including removing the roof entirely. Additions occurred primarily to the rear and south side of the home. An extensively xeriscaped landscape plan for the entire lot includes a new system of berms designed to redirect floodwaters away from the house and to the creek in back. This finished home has two characters: a regional, rustic charm on the exterior and a sophisticated, contemporary elegance on the interior accomplished with an innovative mix of forms and finishes.
