A family of five, who lives in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20-year-old kitchen. Goals of the renovation were to move the cooktop out of the island, install all professional-quality appliances, achieve better traffic flow and update the appearance of the space. The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. As such, the adjacent family room had to become a significant part of the remodel. The back wall of the kitchen is now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. A new tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. The large contrasting Island in a dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. It also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. The far wall of the space used to have a bare wall with a 36” fireplace in it. The goal of this renovation was to include all the surrounding walls in the design. Now the entire wall is made of custom cabinets, including display cabinetry on the upper half. The fireplace is wrapped with a matching color mantel and equipped with a big screen TV. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this space and help bring the two rooms together, as does the porcelain tile floor. The attached family room provides a casual, comfortable space for guest to relax. And the entire space is perfect for family gatherings or entertaining.

At our Winter Sun project, the house was very Tuscan Old World, and our homeowners were wanting a change from all the dark colors. We updated the kitchen, master bathroom and the powder room but kept existing travertine flooring. In the kitchen, we have white painted cabinets on the perimeter, grey painted cabinets for the island with marble looking quartz and grey subway backsplash laid in a herringbone pattern. To add texture, we designed a drywall hood to really make a statement.

A traditional solid ash kitchen painted in Farrow & Ball's Lichen green, perfect for this beautiful Arts & Craft style house. The original kitchen at the back of the house was small and unappealing so the clients desired that the kitchen be recited to the front of the house in a rarely use reception room. Idesign designed and completed the project in the summer of 2021.

The kitchen is outfitted with Sub-Zero Wolf appliances and draws focus to a backsplash of hand-painted tiles in an open floor plan that connects both the living and dining rooms, all of which open up to the back patio.

Although the room must perform well for multiple cooks on occasion (with two dedicated prep/cooking areas and separate clean-up/china storage zone), the homeowner was adamant that the kitchen not become a cold commercial space. Rustic-Modern Finnish Kitchen Our client was inclined to transform this kitchen into a functional, Finnish inspired space. Finnish interior design can simply be described in 3 words: simplicity, innovation, and functionalism. Finnish design addresses the tough climate, unique nature, and limited sunlight, which inspired designers to create solutions, that would meet the everyday life challenges. The combination of the knotty, blue-gray alder base cabinets combined with the clean white wall cabinets reveal mixing these rustic Finnish touches with the modern. The leaded glass on the upper cabinetry was selected so our client can display their personal collection from Finland. Mixing black modern hardware and fixtures with the handmade, light, and bright backsplash tile make this kitchen a timeless show stopper. This project was done in collaboration with Susan O'Brian from EcoLux Interiors.

This kitchen was once dark and brown and will some changes it is like night and day. We went with extra white on the upper cabinets and a soft sage green on the lowers to tie in the existing counters and floors. The back splash was outdated and client wanted something with a little more personality so we went with a neutral Moroccan style tile in a crackle finish for some depth. The lighting was the cherry on top, clear glass in a simple cone shape with some well designed metal hardware for a standout accent piece.

Custom Shaker cabinet on an inset frame. White for the walls and Coastal Grey on the island. The countertops are a simple quartz. The floors are the original travertine and the backsplash is a large pattern tile. The hood is a custom steel hood with a black patina finish. Enjoy!
