A once closed off kitchen now opens up to the living room, converting it into one seamless space. Hickory cabinetry is finished in a warm gray stain giving it a unique medium brown glow. Light white Lagoinha quartzite graces the island and black Raven granite finishes off the perimeter. White subway tile reflects light from the surrounding windows drawing in the needed light. Seating for three accommodates the family and the connecting living room and built-in bar is perfectly suited for entertaining family and friends.

The natural wood tones in this craftsman kitchen are balanced by the cool grey countertops, and are tied together by the quiet tones in the backsplash. This outdated kitchen came with flowered wallpaper, narrow connections to Entry and Dining Room, outdated cabinetry and poor workflow. By opening up the ceiling to expose existing beams, widening both entrys and adding taller, angled windows, light now steams into this bright and cheery Mid Century Modern kitchen. The custom Pratt & Larson turquoise tiles add so much interest and tie into the new custom painted blue door. The walnut wood base cabinets add a warm, natural element. A cozy seating area for TV watching, reading and coffee looks out to the new clear cedar fence and landscape.

This family fell in love with a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home that needed a few updates to fit their lifestyle. They needed more functional kitchen space for caterers and also for their own love of cooking. The kitchen island was redesigned to improve function and add extra oven space, a wine fridge and a prep sink. Block Builders replicated the original cabinetry style for the island and added Frank Lloyd Wright design elements to all of the cabinets. Custom Motawi tile and a stainless exhaust hood are featured above the Wolf range. Window banquette seating designed for the dinette makes the space more welcoming and comfortable. Built in 1860 we designed this kitchen to have the conveniences of modern life with a sense of having it feel like it could be the original kitchen. White oak with clear coated herringbone oak floor and stained white oak cabinetry deliver the two tone feel.

There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.
