To evoke a Charleston vibe in this kitchen, a brick and mortar backsplash in earthy tones was installed to compliment the rich wood stained cabinetry. Lantern pendant lights were selected for over the 8-foot island. New quartz countertops completed this kitchen update.

FORBES TOWNHOUSE Park Slope, Brooklyn Abelow Sherman Architects Partner-in-Charge: David Sherman Contractor: Top Drawer Construction Photographer: Mikiko Kikuyama Completed: 2007 Project Team: Rosie Donovan, Mara Ayuso This project upgrades a brownstone in the Park Slope Historic District in a distinctive manner. The clients are both trained in the visual arts, and have well-developed sensibilities about how a house is used as well as how elements from certain eras can interact visually. A lively dialogue has resulted in a design in which the architectural and construction interventions appear as a subtle background to the decorating. The intended effect is that the structure of each room appears to have a “timeless” quality, while the fit-ups, loose furniture, and lighting appear more contemporary. Thus the bathrooms are sheathed in mosaic tile, with a rough texture, and of indeterminate origin. The color palette is generally muted. The fixtures however are modern Italian. A kitchen features rough brick walls and exposed wood beams, as crooked as can be, while the cabinets within are modernist overlay slabs of walnut veneer. Throughout the house, the visible components include thick Cararra marble, new mahogany windows with weights-and-pulleys, new steel sash windows and doors, and period light fixtures. What is not seen is a state-of-the-art infrastructure consisting of a new hot water plant, structured cabling, new electrical service and plumbing piping. Because of an unusual relationship with its site, there is no backyard to speak of, only an eight foot deep space between the building’s first floor extension and the property line. In order to offset this problem, a series of Ipe wood decks were designed, and very precisely built to less than 1/8 inch tolerance. The lower ground floor flat was lacking natural light and had an elevated terrace at the back that was never used. We excavated the existing terrace in order to open up the facade to bring natural light in to support circadian rhythm and create a connection outside-inside. The new terrace is now used as space for working out, dining, playing and relaxing. It is the heart of the home and it is becoming greener and greener. We changed the internal layout to maximise the spaces and we used natural wooden floor and green joinery that reminds of the plants of terrace.

This Spanish influenced Modern Farmhouse style Kitchen incorporates a variety of textures and finishes to create a calming and functional space to entertain a houseful of guests. The extra large island is in an historic Sherwin Williams green with banquette seating at the end. It provides ample storage and countertop space to prep food and hang around with family. The surrounding wall cabinets are a shade of white that gives contrast to the walls while maintaining a bright and airy feel to the space. Matte black hardware is used on all of the cabinetry to give a cohesive feel. The countertop is a Cambria quartz with grey veining that adds visual interest and warmth to the kitchen that plays well with the white washed brick backsplash. The brick backsplash gives an authentic feel to the room and is the perfect compliment to the deco tile behind the range. The pendant lighting over the island and wall sconce over the kitchen sink add a personal touch and finish while the use of glass globes keeps them from interfering with the open feel of the space and allows the chandelier over the dining table to be the focal lighting fixture.

By painting and glazing these cabinets, we breathed new life into our clients kitchen. With a few well placed accent pieces on the counters and walls, this kitchen turned into one of our favorite jobs!

Forming this customers heritage green dreams was a pleasure for us from start to finish! A contemporary slim shaker design used here in both handle and handleless rail design to give a classic style door a more contemporary design. A newly released door range; the Clifden door in Heritage Green sits perfectly with both of the worktops, the brass rails and the feature brick wall. Using two worksurfaces to create a kitchen that’s distinctively designed is an emerging trend for 2022. The Natural Halifax Oak laminate worktop on the main bank and utility adds to the warmth of the green, though the quartz tops on the kitchen island keep the space bright, reflecting the light from the landscaped garden. Our customer decided to add one last feature after our renders were finalised; a waterfall worktop was added to the island, adding that final touch and making this heritage green dream kitchen truly perfect for this family.
