John and Lynn's kitchen original kitchen had honey oak raised panel cabinetry. The typical 1990s floor plan had a u-shaped work area, a lack of pantry cabinets, and a small countertop desk area that went unused. Additionally, the countertop peninsula caused two problems. It prevented access to the dinette table and it contained the dishwasher. Having the dishwasher in the peninsula meant that when it was open,it prevented them from using the kitchen sink.

The old Bauman kitchen was terribly partitioned off. The laundry room and closet left a narrow hallway between the kitchen and the dining room. The Bauman’s really wanted an open space. They connected with ALL Renovation & Design at a home show. And we immediately got to work modifying the existing space. This proved to be a challenge because there was almost nowhere for the ductwork that fed the upstairs to go. But with some creative planning, we rerouted the ducts to go inside the cabinet next to the wine rack. This allowed us to knock out the walls that separated the kitchen and the dining room giving a beautiful open space. The homeowner had several requests that were designed to make their daily life easier. One was adding a second sink to the island. Another request was extending the kitchen past the window to allow for more cabinets and counter space. In between, we added a comfortable window seat.All the lighting was designed around how the space was going to be used. An example is how where the table was going to be positioned in the dining room next to the pantry and custom wine rack dictated where the ceiling fan and recessed lighting would be installed.The result is a beautiful, functional space that is completely open… just what the Bauman’s wanted. Maple cabinets painted Simply White, Via Lactea Granite countertops, Arley Anatolia Classic 3”x6” tile backsplash in the Matte Carrara with the Mapei Pewter grout, Coretech Georgetown Oak Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring, and LED i-Lighting undercabinet lighting.

The living dining area measures approx 6.5m x 3.6m and includes separate kitchen benches to increase usable space. A dining table can act as a preparation surface for either. The cabinetry and appliances are all IKEA flat pack to reduce the overall spend. Circulation is minimised and always gives access to a use. The very short corridor to the bedroom provides access to the bathroom, laundry cupboard, pantry and broom cupboard.The hybrid plank flooring provides warmth to the space and its linear nature increases the feeling of length. It provides a warm ambience to the space. Both bedroom and living area have ceiling fans. Air conditioning serves the living space.

This 1990's kitchen was in major need of an update with its pickled oak cabinets and turquoise countertops. The house is a split level, so they had tall ceilings and the ability to really open up the space to make one big great room for entertaining and enjoying time together as a family.

The island was built using cabinets that are only 18 x 48 inches. The size allowed for the ideal amount of space in between the cabinets and the island, as well as between the refrigerator and the island, and it left space for the dishwasher to open. Moving between the island and the refrigerator and the dinette to the living room was no longer difficult.
