Klopf Architecture’s client, a family of four with young children, wanted to update their recently purchased home to meet their growing needs across generations. It was essential to maintain the mid-century modern style throughout the project but most importantly, they wanted more natural light brought into the dark kitchen and cramped bathrooms while creating a smoother connection between the kitchen, dining and family room. The kitchen was expanded into the dining area, using part of the original kitchen area as a butler's pantry. With the main kitchen brought out into an open space with new larger windows and two skylights the space became light, open, and airy. Custom cabinetry from Henrybuilt throughout the kitchen and butler's pantry brought functionality to the space. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, and widening the opening from the dining room to the living room created a more open and natural flow between the spaces. New redwood siding was installed in the entry foyer to match the original siding in the family room so it felt original to the house and consistent between the spaces. Oak flooring was installed throughout the house enhancing the movement between the new kitchen and adjacent areas. The two original bathrooms felt dark and cramped so they were expanded and also feature larger windows, modern fixtures and new Heath tile throughout. Custom vanities also from Henrybuilt bring a unified look and feel from the kitchen into the new bathrooms. Designs included plans for a future in-law unit to accommodate the needs of an older generation. The house is much brighter, feels more unified with wider open site lines that provide the family with a better transition and seamless connection between spaces. We are so excited to share with you this beautiful kitchen remodel in Lakeville, MN. Our clients came to us wanting to take out the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. By taking out the wall, we were able to create a new larger kitchen! We kept the sink in the same location, and then moved the stove to the same wall as the sink. The fridge was moved to the far wall, we added an oven/micro combinations and a large pantry. We even had some extra room to create a desk space. The coolest thing about this kitchen is the DOUBLE island! The island closest to the sink functions as a working island and the other is for entertaining with seating for guests. What really shines here is the combination of color that creates such a beautiful subtle elegance. The warm gray color of the cabinets were paired with the brown stained cabinets on the island. We then selected darker honed granite countertops on the perimeter cabinets and a light gray quartz countertop for the islands. The slightly marbled backsplash helps to tie everything in and give such a richness to the whole kitchen. I love adding little pops throughout the kitchen, so matte black hardware and the matte black sink light are perfect! We are so happy with the final result of this kitchen! When it comes to style, Danielle — who just so happens to be a designer — prefers a more modern look. “If I had to choose anything at IKEA, it would have been high gloss white and some orange. That’s what I would have done with a blank slate." The house, however, has more traditional bones. Danielle needed to strike the perfect balance of modern and traditional. While the stainless lights lean more towards modern, the cabinets serve as a graceful nod to the traditional.

Caring for aging parents is both a joy and a challenge. The clients wanted to create a more aging-in-place friendly basement area for their mother. The existing kitchenette was more of a glorified bar and did not give her the option of cooking independently, and definitely not stylishly. We re-configured the area so it was all open, with full kitchen capabilities. All appliances were selected to cater to the mother's limited reach, so all functional storage and product usage can be done without raising arms excessively. Special storage solutions include a peg-system for a dish drawer, tiered silverware trays, a slide-up appliance garage, and pivoting pantry storage. The cabinets also give ample display space for her collection of antique glassware. In lieu of an island, we created a solid-surface top for a standard table so food can be prepped while sitting and without damaging the table top. All items reflect the mother's tastes and existing furniture so she can truly feel like this basement is her space, while still being close to her son and daughter-in-law.
