Situated at the top of the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Park in Danville, this mid-century modern hilltop home had great architectural features, but needed a kitchen update that spoke to the design style of the rest of the house. We would have to say this project was one of our most challenging when it came to blending the mid-century style of the house with a more eclectic and modern look that the clients were drawn to. But who doesn't love a good challenge? We removed the builder-grade cabinetry put in by a previous owner and took down a wall to open up the kitchen to the rest of the great room. The kitchen features a custom designed hood as well as custom cabinetry with an intricate beaded details that sets it apart from all of our other cabinetry designs. The pop of blue paired with the dark walnut creates an eye catching contrast. Ridgecrest also designed and fabricated solid steel wall cabinetry to store countertop appliances and display dishes and glasses. The copper accents on the range and faucets bring the design full circle and finish this gorgeous one-of-a-kind-kitchen off nicely.

Comfortable, beautiful, and functional – this renovation reflects a great collaboration between the owners, interior designer, and our architectural designer. This family wanted to reconfigure their first floor to create a layout that suited their lifestyle. They were working with an interior designer but found they needed a full-service firm that could properly address some structural issues. Relocating the kitchen along the entire back of the house allowed for an expanded kitchen with a large island that has seating. To open the kitchen to the deck, we removed the standard sliding door and two windows, installed a header to support a larger opening, and introduced new sliding doors that are almost 12-feet wide and 7-feet high.

My busy, family-centric clients wanted to avoid any major construction and keep the original cabinetry and counters in the kitchen. Working withing the room’s existing confines, the overall objective was to enhance the aesthetic of each space. We repainted the existing bland cabinetry an inviting Wedgewood gray by Benjamin Moore to draw the eye to the cabinetry and away from the dated granite counter tops. We replaced the existing commonplace pendants with larger brass and white glass statement globes that have subtle yet detailed metal bands with brass rivets. The hardware on the cabinets was replaced with French-inspired brass knobs and pulls.

On the opposite side of the main run of units in this handleless Shaker kitchen are these two beautiful larders. They add a perfect amount of storage space to this family home. Our client chose a different colour to the main kitchen to have some separation between the units and we think it looks great. Whilst the rest of the kitchen is navy blue, the larders are painted in French Grey Mid by the Little Greene Paint Company. We love how these larders frame the door leading into a gorgeous dining room.

The clients worked with the interior designer to select a beautiful blue-gray color for perimeter the cabinets. There is a pantry cabinet to the left of the fridge, and on the right is an appliance garage on the counter with a door that flips up and back. Below the appliance garage is an extra deep pull-out drawer for additional small appliances. A quartz countertop, farm sink, and cement accent tile at the range complete the look. Wall ovens on the other side of the island. The new taller and wider sliding glass door system provides a welcome connection to the deck.

This remodel was for a family that wanted a contemporary style kitchen with a mix of modern and traditional elements. To bring in the traditional, we installed hardwood flooring in grey and brown tones and Shaker style cabinets but updated them in a grey-brown color for the perimeter and a navy blue for the island. The cabinet hardware is a bronze color with a modern design-bar pulls instead of knobs for all cabinets and drawers. To emulate the color of the cabinet hardware, the island pendants are a bronze wire fixture in addition to the bronze brackets holding up the wine rack display. The countertops are a marble design quartz and the appliances are stainless steel. The backsplash on the stove wall is a contemporary linen-like tile installed in a chevron design and the coffee bar area is also a linen-like tile but in an abstract design. There is a walnut shelf above the quartz countertops to bring in some warmth and rustic elements to the area. For a more contemporary feel, we left the HVAC exposed but painted it white as well as the traditional wooden beams. Overall, the design team and the clients felt the kitchen lived up to their expectations and more of what a Contemporary design could be. Photos by Rick Young

We love the striking Statuario worktops by Teltos. The large veining really adds a statement to this island, especially with the interesting curved details that the client opted for. This handleless kitchen has lots of interesting details from the reeded glass cupboards, to the open base units and the beautiful oak floors. Definitely one of our favourite colours is this Basalt by Little Greene.
