A kitchen designed by Artichoke for a riverside house in Dartmouth on the Devon coast. The kitchen was designed using inspiration from a ship's galley.

This 1980's dark kitchen was brought to the 21st century with modern and state of the art appliances fit for a chef. Dark walls are usually considered dim and forbearing but used in the right way, they can make a area look rich and modern. In this kitchen, the rich brown wall celebrates the antique German clock which was used as a functional and decorative element. This 18th century New Forest cottage has been sympathetically renovated, retaining much of its original character including exposed beams and stunning fireplaces. The centre piece of the property is the barn, which boasts two open planned mezzanine floors. The high vaulted ceilings give a sense of space and grandeur. The contemporary solid wood benches give ample seating capacity, while imparting a rustic countryside feel. The contemporary furnishings stand in juxtaposition to the sitting room's traditional beamed ceiling and rustic fireplace. With a foundation of timeless neutrals, a complementary colour scheme of blue brings this living room to life. With fabulous views out to sea from the mouth of the River Dart, this bespoke kitchen posed some exciting challenges for our team: the new build house had to have all its materials delivered by barge because of difficult access from above. With its proximity to the sea and our clients’ passion for sailing, the island was inspired by a yacht’s galley. The solid teak worktop includes a wooden preparation sink and the glass splashback was custom made to follow the curve of the wall. Primary materials: Painted furniture finished with sprayed PU pigmented lacquer. Full height glass splashbacks, quarter sawn olive ash veneers with bespoke recessed stainless steel handle plates. Crema Botticino quartz and solid teak worktops. Bespoke teak preparation sink.
