This home was gutted to the studs, opened up to take advantage of its gorgeous views and designed for a family with young children. This custom new construction home located in Fox Trail, Illinois was designed for a sizeable family who do a lot of extended family entertaining. There was a strong need to have the ability to entertain large groups and the family cooks together. The family is of Indian descent and because of this there were a lot of functional requirements including thoughtful solutions for dry storage and spices. The architecture of this project is more modern aesthetic, so the kitchen design followed suit. The home sits on a wooded site and has a pool and lots of glass. Taking cues from the beautiful site, O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago focused the design on bringing the outdoors in with the goal of achieving an organic feel to the room. They used solid walnut timber with a very natural stain so the grain of the wood comes through. There is a very integrated feeling to the kitchen. The volume of the space really opens up when you get to the kitchen. There was a lot of thoughtfulness on the scaling of the cabinetry which around the perimeter is nestled into the architecture. obrienharris.com

The brief for this unique kitchen was for it to be ‘a huge piece of furniture’. Well….. challenge accepted. To achieve this goal, we knew that we needed to approach the design from the details outwards, so we started with the cabinet doors. As the kitchen was to be over three levels rather than the traditional two, and because we wanted to articulate the idea of ‘furniture’ rather than ‘kitchen cabinets’, we designed three complimentary cabinet doors, each with their own personalities. Door pulls and pan hooks were made from beautiful hexagonal brass rods, and drawers were lined for cutlery, utensils and cookware. A slim shelf above the splashback provided a place for kitchen essentials like salt and oil. The mid-level of the kitchen was kept clean and uncluttered by means of our signature F+B ‘School House’ off-white lacquer, so that the wood didn’t feel overpowering. But the main event is the truss shelf that spans the open side of the kitchen like a portal frame. This beautifully detailed piece of Japanese-inspired design gives space for the client’s collection of Asian ceramics, and for our bespoke Japanese shoji paper lanterns, which light the space. A unique kitchen, handmade like only a furniture maker could.

The renovated kitchen now includes fresh white Cambria Quartz countertops on the dual kitchen islands along with an updated backsplash of natural stone. The stunning focal point of the kitchen is a beautiful wave-like 3D panel on the front of the island illuminated with colorful LED lights. Engineered hardwood flooring in a rich tone was installed with a glue-down application that complements the architectural style of the home.

This kitchen proves small East sac bungalows can have high function and all the storage of a larger kitchen. A large peninsula overlooks the dining and living room for an open concept. A lower countertop areas gives prep surface for baking and use of small appliances. Geometric hexite tiles by fireclay are finished with pale blue grout, which complements the upper cabinets. The same hexite pattern was recreated by a local artist on the refrigerator panes. A textured striped linen fabric by Ralph Lauren was selected for the interior clerestory windows of the wall cabinets.

The kitchen is designed for two serious home chefs who often entertain guests for dinner parties. Merging the kitchen and dining room into a singular space was a strategic design decision to both foster their style of ‘chefs table’ entertaining, and also make the most efficient use of valuable floor space - a common consideration in most Toronto homes. The table becomes an island-like surface for additional prep space, and also as the surface upon which the meal is eventually enjoyed.
