This one-story, 4 bedroom/2.5 bathroom home was transformed from top to bottom with Pasadena Robles floor tile (with the exception of the bathrooms), new baseboards and crown molding, new interior doors, windows, hardware and plumbing fixtures. The kitchen was outfit with a commercial grade Wolf oven, microwave, coffee maker and gas cooktop; Bosch dishwasher; Cirrus range hood; and SubZero wine storage and refrigerator/freezer. Beautiful gray Neolith countertops were used for the kitchen island and hall with a 1” built up square edge. Smoke-colored Island glass was designed into a full height backsplash. Bathrooms were laid with Ivory Ceramic tile and walnut cabinets.

The modern direction given, really opened up the use of line, form, shape and weight. All of these design elements being very strong, were softened by the use of an organic colour scheme. This was especially important as the house had such a strong connection with neighbouring national park. The highlight window heavily dictated the strong use of horizontal lines in the kitchen. This was achieved through the use of Blum Aventos HK lift ups, wide drawers and running the timber grain horizontally. The double layered wall cabinetry above the cooktop, at different depths added shape and form to this long run of cabinetry. Shape and form was also strongly considered when designing the kitchen island. The client’s decision to restrict the kitchen size to allow for a separate casual eating area meant that the kitchen island could become the kitchen show piece. The intent was for the island to be a piece of art, sculptural in form and weight. The box details at each end of the island with the shadow-line running through to match the drawers on the back of the island added another visual dimension. The decision to increase the kickboard set back finally gave the island a weightlessness which it needed to balance out its large scale.

This beautiful modern San Diego Kitchen remodel features Starmark Hickory Wood Tempo style cabinets with a champagne finish. The counter top Is granite with the a waterfall edge that is complimented by a Treasure "Find" mosaic tile back splash. An update to the existing kitchen, replacing the tired doors with fresh powder blue fronts. A line of bold tiles and open shelving adds a hit of colour, pattern and texture to the fresh, clean space.

The showpiece of this kitchen was the custom designed rusted steel backsplash. Together with the clients we rusted the steel ourselves to created the gorgeous patina you see. Once the steel was rusted our contractor sealed and installed the backsplash. Utton Photography - Greg Utton
