In our Contemporary Bellevue Residence we wanted the aesthetic to be clean and bright. This is a similar plan to our Victoria Crest home with a few changes and different design elements. Areas of focus; large open kitchen with waterfall countertops and awning upper flat panel cabinets, elevator, interior and exterior fireplaces, floating flat panel vanities in bathrooms, home theater room, large master suite and rooftop deck. Warm and welcoming are just two of the words that first come to mind when you set your eyes on this stunning space. Known for its culture and art exhibitions, Whitechapel is a vibrant district in the East End of London and this property reflects just that. If you’re a fan of The Main Company, you will know that we are passionate about rustic, reclaimed materials and this space comprises everything that we love, mixing natural textures like concrete, brick, and wood, and the end result is outstanding. Floor to ceiling Crittal style windows create a light and airy space, allowing the homeowners to go for darker, bolder accent colours throughout the penthouse apartment. The kitchen cabinetry has a Brushed Brass Finish, complementing the surrounding exposed brick perfectly, adding a vintage feel to the space along with other features such as a classic Butler sink. The handless cupboards add a modern touch, creating a kitchen that will last for years to come. The handless cabinetry and solid oaks drawers have been topped with concrete worktops as well as a concrete splashback beneath the Elica extractor.

Michael K. Wilkinson The kitchen was small, outdated, and dark. To provide a better connection to the adjacent dining room, we enlarged the opening between the kitchen and dining room and installed a peninsula countertop that has seating on one side. This is an apartment building with concrete ceilings, so we had to lower the kitchen ceiling 10 inches in order to install recessed lights. The apartment has soaring 9-foot 3-inch ceiling heights, so the space does not feel small. The kitchen also has a new combination paddle fan/light. The drum shape is echoed in the pendant lights and the dining room fixture. All of the lights are on dimmers, something we prefer because it allows our clients to create a range of moods. There is also lighting inside the four glass cabinet doors above the range. To meet code, we had to relocate the electrical panel inside kitchen to the dining room wall. The owner was able to cover it with art work. The owner selected cherry cabinets in a natural finish, topped with contrasting Piracema White granite. The backsplash throughout the kitchen is gray glass subway tile. Behind the stove, the designer added some interest by adding blue tiles, but rotating the 4-inch tiles at a 45-degree angle. Due to size of the kitchen, the owner opted for a narrow 18-inch dishwasher and a 24-inch counter-depth refrigerator. The stove, however, is a standard 30-inch with a microwave above. The new 2 ¼-inch rift and quarter white oak boards were stained and finished along with the existing floors in the apartment for a seamless look.

A small kitchen needs to be designed by being cognizant of every kitchen item the client owns and when the kitchen is only 90 sq ft, this can be quite challenging! The original kitchen housed a double wall oven, cook top and 36” range. Since space was at a minimum and the client’s list for appliances was extensive (range, warming drawer, wine refrigerator, dishwasher, ref) we had to think quite creatively. We also had 2 doors to contend with and 2 focal points to create! The first step was to move to a 27” wide refrigerator, this gained 9 additional inches of working counter space between the sink and refrigerator. Opting for a 24” wide single bowl sink over the original 30” netted a total of 15” for a tray divider cabinet and 39” of working counter space between the sink and the refrigerator! The new 30” range was positioned as star on the same wall as the existing cook top. Since the space did not lend us the ability to balance the cabinet doors sizes on both sides of the hood, we chose a door style that focused your eyes not on the overall size of the door, but on the vertical detailing. The subtle grain of the Rift White Oak further minimized the odd sizing of the doors. (NOTE: THE COLOURS OF THE KITCHEN ARE REPRESENTED PROPERLY IN THE PHOTO OF THE RANGE WALL) To help create a visual width of the room – we used a glass tile set in a horizontal pattern. Our ultimate goal for this space was to create a calm and flowing space, all appliances are fully integrated to enhance the visual flow to the room. This kitchen remodel involved the demolition of several intervening rooms to create a large kitchen/family room that now connects directly to the backyard and the pool area. The new raised roof and clerestory help to bring light into the heart of the house and provides views to the surrounding treetops. The kitchen cabinets are by Italian manufacturer Scavolini.
